Touhou Koumakyou: New Classic Out 10 September — ZUN’s Bullet Hell Remake on PS5, Switch and PC

The Touhou Project is one of the most beloved doujin franchises in gaming history, and on 10 September 2026 its oldest Windows entry finally comes home to consoles — reworked by ZUN himself from the ground up. Touhou Koumakyou: New Classic — the Embodiment of Scarlet Devil launches simultaneously on Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5 and PC via Steam, developed by ZUN’s newly formed circle Shanghai Alice Reprise and published by Alliance Arts.

What Is Touhou Koumakyou: New Classic?

The original Touhou Koumakyou ~ the Embodiment of Scarlet Devil was released by ZUN in 2002 as a PC doujin title — the sixth mainline Touhou game and the entry that defined the modern bullet-hell formula the series is known for: dense danmaku patterns, hand-drawn character art, stage boss dialogue, and ZUN’s idiosyncratic electronic arrangements. Over two decades later it remains the most commonly recommended entry point for newcomers, and a cultural cornerstone of the doujin game scene across Japan and Asia.

New Classic is not a simple port or upscaling. ZUN has personally redrawn artwork, re-arranged every piece of background music — fan favourites like U.N. Owen Was Her? and Beloved Tomboyish Girl — and introduced entirely new gameplay systems. The Deluxe Edition bundles a Digital Sound Player featuring over 30 tracks, covering both the original 2002 synth versions and the new 2026 arrangements side by side.

Two Modes in One Package — Classic and New Classic

Every purchase includes both versions of the game:

  • New Classic Version — 1080p remastered visuals, ZUN’s rearranged music, new gameplay systems, and an Infinite Lives option that lets players experience the full story without a game-over screen standing in the way.
  • Classic Version — the original 2002 Touhou Koumakyou, preserved exactly as ZUN first released it, playable as a living archive.

For veterans this means you can play the original before toggling to New Classic to hear what 24 years of growth sound like on the same stage themes. For first-timers, Infinite Lives removes the steepest barrier to entry in the entire Touhou series.

Reimu or Marisa — Two Bullet-Hell Styles

Players choose between two iconic protagonists:

  • Hakurei Reimu — wide attack coverage and an elusive hitbox; the recommended pick for newcomers who want to focus on reading patterns rather than precise aiming.
  • Kirisame Marisa — narrower spread but significantly higher firepower; the pick for score-chasers comfortable threading through dense danmaku.

Each character carries multiple Shot Types, creating four distinct playstyles across the game’s six stages and a bonus Extra stage. The game also supports 11 languages — Japanese, English, Simplified and Traditional Chinese, Korean, French, German, Spanish, Russian, Brazilian Portuguese and Italian — so Singapore players on any platform can jump in without a language barrier.

The Scarlet Devil Mansion and Flandre’s Extra Stage

The story follows Reimu or Marisa as they investigate the scarlet mist blanketing Gensoukyou, tracing it to the Scarlet Devil Mansion at the edge of the lake. Stage bosses include gate guardian Hong Meiling, head maid Sakuya Izayoi, library witch Patchouli Knowledge and the diminutive vampire Remilia Scarlet — their spell cards now displayed in 1080p with full English localisation.

Clear the main game and the Extra stage unlocks: a showdown with Remilia’s sister Flandre Scarlet, whose spell card Forbidden Barrage: Starbow Break carpets the screen with one of the most iconic bullet patterns in the franchise’s history.
