Detective Conan is turning 30 — and it is celebrating the way only Shinichi Kudo’s pint-sized alter ego can: with a mystery so large it threatens the whole of Japan. A two-hour TV special, the anime’s first of that scale in roughly a decade, will air on 25 September 2026 at 9 PM JST on Nippon TV’s flagship Friday Road Show block.
30号殺人事件 — A Counterfeit Crisis Goes National
The special is titled 30号殺人事件 (Case No. 30 Murder Incident), a title that doubles as a 30th-anniversary pun. The story kicks off at the Printing Bureau’s Nagano factory, where Conan, the Junior Detective Boys, Professor Agasa, Ran, and Sonoko have gathered to witness the launch of a redesigned 10,000-yen note — only for a murder victim to turn up with counterfeit bills at the scene.
What follows escalates into a national crisis, pulling in police agencies from multiple prefectures and sending Conan and Heiji Hattori to Osaka, believed to be where the counterfeits are being printed. It is described as featuring an unprecedented all-star cast — expect virtually every major recurring character to get screen time across the two hours.
The last time a TV-format Conan special ran at two hours was 2016’s Episode ONE: The Deduction Showdown That Shrank the Great Detective, which re-told the series’ origin story. A decade later, this new special carries a considerably more ambitious national-scale thriller premise.
Guest Voice and Production Team
The guest voice spotlight goes to actress Elaiza Ikeda (池田エライザ), who plays Satomi Touko, a document authentication specialist at the National Police Agency’s Scientific Police Research Institute. The character is central to identifying the counterfeit currency, making her a key ally in Conan’s investigation rather than a side role.
Behind the scenes, the special is directed by Kamanaka Fumiharu, who previously helmed the well-received Police Academy Arc: Wild Police Story spin-off, and written by Sakurai Takeharu, a theatrical film veteran whose credits include Detective Conan: Black Iron Submarine. Katsuo Ohno, the composer behind the series’ iconic score since its 1996 debut, returns to provide the music. Animation is handled, as always, by TMS Entertainment.
A Full Month of 30th Anniversary Events
The special is the centrepiece of a wider 30th anniversary programme. Netflix launched a curated set of character-focused episode collections on 5 September, making themed viewing marathons easier to organise. Closer to the special’s airdate, YouTuber HIKAKIN is set to host a Season 1 marathon viewing on 20–23 September.
Also announced as part of the 30th anniversary slate is an interactive anime called 三十一島の殺人 (Thirty-One Island Murder Case), a novel format where viewers can attempt to deduce the culprit themselves before the reveal — a fitting meta-celebration for a show built entirely on audience participation in mystery-solving. Details on broadcast and release are to be confirmed.
For those in and around Japan, the series will appear at the Kyoto International Manga & Anime Fair from 19–20 September, and a commemorative fireworks show is planned for 21 November in Yokohama.
As for Singapore fans: the regular weekly series streams on Crunchyroll — see our anime coverage for related news, but no international streaming date for this two-hour special has been confirmed yet. If the pattern from previous Nippon TV Conan specials holds, a Crunchyroll simulcast or near-simultaneous release is plausible — but it is worth watching for an announcement closer to 25 September. The Japan broadcast itself begins at 9 PM JST, which is 8 PM SGT on the same night.
