Sword Art Online: Echoes of Aincrad Is Out Now on PS5, Xbox and PC

Two years after it was first teased, the Sword Art Online game every SAO fan actually wanted — a proper single-player action RPG set inside Aincrad, with you as the player character — has finally arrived. Sword Art Online: Echoes of Aincrad is out now on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam, published by Bandai Namco Entertainment. Singapore PS5 and Xbox players can dive in today; the PC launch on Steam is live as well.

Step Into the Death Game

The premise puts you in the boots of an early beta tester who, like the rest of the 10,000 players logged into the first official launch of Sword Art Online, discovers that logging out is no longer possible — and that dying in-game means dying for real. You start with a slight advantage over most players thanks to your beta access to certain quests and mechanics, but Floor 1 is still a brutal introduction. The story escalates from Floor 2 onwards as a cryptic quest hints at a catastrophe that may only be preventable under very specific conditions.

Echoes of Aincrad is fully single-player — no online multiplayer — but the game replicates the feeling of a massive VRMMORPG through its AI partner system, its layered quest design, and the consistent pressure of the death game stakes. The game covers the first two complete floors of the floating castle, with an expansion DLC confirmed to add more by 31 December 2026.

Six Weapons, One Partner

Combat is built around six distinct weapon types — Sword & Shield, Two-Handed Axe, Dagger, Rapier, Two-Handed Sword, and Mace — each with a different moveset and a roster of Sword Skills (special ability attacks). Weapons can be upgraded and combined for further customisation.

For every quest, you bring one partner from a growing roster of characters who each play a different role: some deal damage, others heal, buff, or control crowds. You can direct their positioning and focus mid-fight, which adds a light layer of tactics to what is otherwise a fast, action-forward combat system. Pick the wrong partner for a boss and you will feel it; pick the right one and some of Aincrad’s nastier encounters click into place satisfyingly.

Death Game Mode — For Those Who Dare

Beyond the standard story mode sits the game’s highest-stakes offering: Death Game Mode, where a single death permanently erases your save file. It is available immediately for Deluxe and Ultimate edition buyers, and unlockable after completing the story for Standard edition players. If you have ever watched the SAO anime and wondered what it would actually feel like to play under those conditions, this is as close as games have come to a genuine answer.

Editions and Where to Get It

Three digital editions are available at launch. The Standard Edition (USD 69.99) covers the base game. The Deluxe Edition (USD 89.99) bundles the Expansion DLC Pass, a starter resource pack, and Death Game Mode Early Unlock. The Ultimate Edition (USD 109.99) adds an exclusive bonus anime short, a 141-track digital soundtrack, a 640-page digital artbook, and a special armour set. Pre-order purchasers — the bonus runs until today — receive the Proto-Elucidator Weapon Pack, a set of six jet-black weapons themed on Kirito’s signature blade. SGD pricing is listed directly on the PlayStation Store and Steam for Singapore players. A physical Aincrad Edition (USD 149.99) includes an artbook, soundtrack, and exclusive collectibles.

The game supports English and Japanese audio with subtitles in 14 languages, including Traditional Chinese, Indonesian, Thai, and Korean — making the Asia release a complete, localised package for the region. For more game launch news, head to our Game News section.

SAO: Integral Domain — New Original Film Announced for 2028

Kirito and Asuna are heading back to the big screen — and this time, it is not a retelling. Aniplex has revealed Sword Art Online the Movie – Integral Domain –, a completely original theatrical story set beyond the Alicization arc, with a 2028 cinema release confirmed. Full staff, the teaser visual, and a first teaser trailer all dropped on 7 July 2026 via the Aniplex official channels, making this the most concrete look yet at where the SAO franchise goes after the TV series concluded its main storyline.

The First Fully Original SAO Film Since Ordinal Scale

This is a significant distinction worth flagging for fans: Integral Domain is not an adaptation of existing light novel chapters. That puts it in the same category as Ordinal Scale (2017) — a story written specifically for the cinema, with original screenwriting direction from creator Reki Kawahara. The two Progressive films (2021 and 2022) adapted the Progressive reboot light novels, so this is genuinely new territory.

The Aniplex official page describes the premise simply: “the story moves to a new stage” — set directly after the events of the Alicization / War of Underworld arc. No plot details beyond that have been released yet, but Kawahara is providing the story concept, so this is the author’s own vision for what happens next to Kirito and Asuna rather than a spin-off scripted by a different writer.

Director, Studio, and Full Staff Confirmed

The creative team is a familiar combination of SAO franchise veterans and fresh production muscle:

  • Director: Shingo Adachi — an animation director across multiple seasons of the TV series, making his theatrical directorial feature debut here
  • Character design: Yumiko Yamamoto — returning from both Progressive films
  • Original character design concept: abec (the original light novel illustrator)
  • Story concept: Reki Kawahara
  • Animation production: A-1 Pictures / Psyde Kick Studio — Psyde Kick Studio is A-1 Pictures’ newer internal animation label, co-producing alongside the parent studio
  • Distribution (Japan): ANIMEC

Voice cast confirmed so far: Yoshitsugu Matsuoka as Kirito and Haruka Tomatsu as Asuna. Both are originals from the first season. No additional cast has been announced yet.

What Singapore SAO Fans Need to Know

No international theatrical dates have been announced beyond the 2028 Japan release window, and no Southeast Asia distribution partners have been named yet. That said, every major SAO theatrical release has made it to Singapore: Ordinal Scale screened here in 2017, and both Progressive films received local cinema runs as well — so a Singapore theatrical release is realistic, just unconfirmed.

If you are behind on the series, the 2028 release gives you time to work through Alicization and War of Underworld before the film’s story picks up. Crunchyroll carries both arcs for streaming in Singapore.

The official film page is live at swordart-online.net/integral, and the Japanese announcement was first reported by Famitsu (Japanese) and the Aniplex official site. Follow anime news on GameTrader.SG for any Singapore screening updates as they drop.

SAO Echoes of Aincrad Launches 9 July on PS5 and PC

Sword Art Online’s latest action RPG, Echoes of Aincrad, launches globally on 9 July on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S — and on PC via Steam on 10 July. Developed by Game Studio Inc. and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment, it is the first SAO game where you play as a fully custom character rather than Kirito himself, stepping into the original Aincrad death game alongside familiar faces from the series.

Create Your Own Hero

Character creation goes deep. You choose from body type presets, then fine-tune individual proportions through sliders — bust, waist, arm width, leg shape, skin tone and facial features — before picking your starting gear and preferred weapon. Your hero is entirely yours; Iori, the original character featured in official story content, serves as a separate NPC companion alongside Argo, Kirito and Asuna rather than a fixed protagonist you are locked into playing.

Six Weapons, Real-Time Combat and Sword Skills

Combat is real-time and stamina-managed. Six weapon types are available — Sword & Shield, Two-Handed Axe, Dagger, Rapier, Two-Handed Sword and Mace — each with its own move set and signature Sword Skills, the series’ charged special attacks that have been a staple since the original light novels. Chaining those skills against groups of enemies in the gameplay footage looks satisfying; the arc of a wide sword slash clearing a room full of flaming opponents gives a sense of how powerful a well-timed skill feels.

Partner System and Iconic Boss Fights

You can bring 1–3 AI partners into each quest, with their weapons and skills customisable between runs. Floor bosses return in full action-RPG form — Illfang the Kobold Lord, the Floor 1 boss that anime fans have been waiting to face head-on since 2012, shows up with attack-pattern phases and a proper health bar. Two complete floors of Aincrad are open to explore, spanning plains, dungeons and other environments drawn from the original story.

Death Game Mode: Optional Permadeath

For those who want to feel the full weight of Aincrad’s stakes, Death Game Mode introduces permadeath — die in combat and your save is gone. It unlocks after you clear the main story, or from day one if you pick up the Deluxe or Ultimate Edition. It is a smart optional layer that lets casual players enjoy the story at their own pace while keeping the series’ defining tension available for anyone who wants to raise the stakes.

Platforms, Price and Singapore Availability

Echoes of Aincrad launches on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S on 9 July with preloads opening on 8 July, and on PC via Steam on 10 July at 03:00 UTC (11:00 SGT). The game ships in 14 languages including Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Thai and Indonesian, making it well-suited for players across Southeast Asia. The Standard Edition is priced at US$69.99; Singapore PlayStation Store and Steam pricing will follow at launch. Echoes of Aincrad Free Demo Out Now — Save Data Carries Over

Singapore SAO fans, your time is now — the free demo for Echoes of Aincrad: Sword Art Online is live as of today (16 June) on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Steam. Better yet, progress from the demo transfers directly to the full game when it ships on 9 July.

What the SAO Echoes of Aincrad demo covers

The demo drops you into the “beta test” section — the opening chapter of the game where Aincrad’s true nature has not yet been revealed. It is a tightly scoped slice, but a meaningful one: you get to build your avatar, learn the combat system, and get a feel for the partner AI before the full death-game reality sets in.

A few things are limited compared to the final release:

  • Character customisation is fixed to the beta test appearance
  • Difficulty capped at Story and Normal (Hard and Very Hard unlock in the full game)
  • Level cap: 15
  • Weapon proficiency cap: 3
  • Some balance specs may differ from the version that ships in July

Save data carries over — but there is a catch

Your demo save transfers to the full game, so any progress you make is not wasted. The one caveat: transferred save files cannot be switched to Death Game Mode — the permadeath mode where a game over permanently deletes your save data. If you plan to play Death Game Mode from the very start, begin a fresh run on launch day rather than carry over from the demo.

About Echoes of Aincrad

Developed by Game Studio Inc. and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment, Echoes of Aincrad is a brand-new action RPG in the SAO franchise — not a retelling of the anime but a fresh story set inside Aincrad, with a fully customisable player avatar. You are not playing as Kirito: you create your own hero, forge bonds with an AI partner whose tactics adapt to yours, and climb the floors of the floating castle using Sword Skills and real-time combat. Original characters from the SAO lore, including Argo, Kirito, and Asuna, appear alongside your custom protagonist, with story and character designs overseen by series creator Reki Kawahara.

The game’s theme song is “Live to Survive” by Aimer, which debuted in the second story trailer released on 13 June.
