Darwin’s Game Gets a Live-Action Film — Opening in Japan 12 March 2027

The deadly smartphone game is making the leap from manga panels to the cinema screen. Toei and Amazon Content Services have announced a live-action Darwin’s Game film, with a Japanese theatrical release set for 12 March 2027 and the full main cast and first teaser dropping simultaneously.

A High-Powered Cast Steps into the Game

Leading the film is Taishi Nakagawa as Kaname, the protagonist who downloads what looks like a normal mobile game and discovers the battles it stages are lethally real. For the film, Kaname has been reimagined as a university student rather than a high-schooler, sharpening the stakes slightly.

Rounding out the main cast: Koki, as Shuka (the chain-wielding Queen of Thorns), Mei Hata as Rein, Fuju Kamio as Ryuji, and Koji Yamamoto as Hiiragi. The teaser visual gives each character their own panel — a neat echo of the game-lobby format in the source material — and the ensemble looks ready for a fight.

What Is Darwin’s Game?

Darwin’s Game is a survival-action manga by FLIPFLOPs, serialised in Bessatsu Shonen Champion (Akita Shoten) from 2012 to 2023 across 30 volumes and clocking over 10 million copies in circulation. The premise: a college student downloads a smartphone game and discovers the duels it sets up are real, each player wielding a supernatural ability — a Sigil — that manifests differently for everyone. It sits comfortably alongside Sword Art Online and Kaiji in the deadly-game subgenre that has always had a strong following in Southeast Asia.

A 12-episode anime adaptation aired in early 2020 and is available on Netflix, so fans who missed it then have a clean way to catch up before the movie arrives.

The Team Behind the Camera

Director Fumihiko Sori is best known internationally for the live-action Fullmetal Alchemist films, and has confirmed the production will rely heavily on VFX — fitting, given the outlandish Sigil powers on display in the teaser. The screenplay is co-written by Sori and Hayato Miura.

The co-production between Amazon Content Services LLC and TOEI COMPANY, LTD. is worth watching from a Singapore perspective. International streaming distribution has not been confirmed yet, but Amazon’s involvement hints that wider availability beyond Japan theatrical could follow. Scissor Seven: Movie, HEIBAI Spin-Off and Game Revealed

The Scissor Seven universe is about to get a lot bigger. At BilibiliWorld 2026 today, AHAVERSE — the studio behind the franchise — unveiled three major new projects at once: a theatrical feature film, a new animated spin-off series called HEIBAI, and expanded plans for the Shadow Clash mobile game. The series that became the first Chinese original animation to debut as a Netflix Original now has its most ambitious slate yet.

Scissor Seven: The Movie — Into the Heart of Xuanwu (2028)

The headline announcement is a standalone theatrical film, currently in production and targeting a global theatrical release in 2028. The movie takes Seven into Xuanwu — the mysterious martial arts kingdom where he originally came from — and explores the culture, politics and power struggles that shaped his world long before the events of the series.

AHAVERSE said in an exclusive interview with Screen Rant that the film “has been designed as a standalone adventure, so audiences who are discovering Scissor Seven for the first time can enjoy it without having seen the animated series.” New characters join returning favourites, and the studio says the movie maintains the series’ signature blend of comedy, action and emotional storytelling — just at cinematic scale.

HEIBAI — A New Animated Series Set 25 Years Earlier

Alongside the film, AHAVERSE announced HEIBAI, an animated spin-off based on one of China’s most popular official Scissor Seven comics. Rather than following Seven, HEIBAI centres on two new protagonists — Mo Lang and Bai Qi — two characters with contrasting personalities set on very different journeys.

The series is set roughly 25 years before Scissor Seven, in an era of ancient legends and dangerous encounters. Despite the timeline, AHAVERSE is calling it a spin-off rather than a prequel, and say it is fully accessible to newcomers. HEIBAI is scheduled to premiere in China in Q1 2027; international release details are to be confirmed.

Shadow Clash — The Official Mobile Game Hits China This Year

Rounding out the announcement is Scissor Seven: Shadow Clash, the franchise’s first official action-adventure mobile game, developed in partnership with SHAREFUN studio. The game promises original stories beyond anything in the animated series. A China launch is planned for Q4 2026, with global release details to follow.

Where Singapore Fans Stand Right Now

All five seasons of Scissor Seven are streaming on Netflix Singapore today — if you have not watched it, the franchise’s 30-plus billion views globally and presence in 190-plus countries give you a sense of how big this has become. As Aiken Zou, founder of AHAVERSE, put it at BilibiliWorld 2026: “Our goal is to give global audiences more worlds to return to, while creating opportunities for creators to help shape the stories of tomorrow.”

The movie (2028 global release) and HEIBAI (Q1 2027 China premiere) do not have confirmed Singapore or international streaming dates yet — Netflix handled the series internationally and is the most likely home for both, but nothing is official. Maomao is heading to the big screen. Gekijōban Kusuriya no Hitorigoto: Bōhi no Hihō — The Apothecary Diaries: The Deceased Empress’ Treasure — opens in Japanese cinemas on 11 December 2026, marking the first theatrical film for one of Crunchyroll’s most-watched anime franchises of recent years.

Maomao’s Next Case: Treasure, Pirates, and an Imperial Secret

The film sends Maomao and Jinshi far outside the palace on a grim errand: escort the remains of a concubine — dead five years — back to her homeland. The mission turns dangerous fast. They encounter pirates, hidden treasure, and a mysterious boy named Mu Qing who holds the key to the dead woman’s secrets. It is a self-contained story set between the events of Seasons 2 and 3, corresponding roughly to volume 4.5 of the original light novel series.

New Character, Familiar Voices

The main cast returns: Aoi Yūki reprises Maomao and Takeo Ōtsuka is back as Jinshi. The film’s new face is Mu Qing, voiced by Mariya Ise — whose extensive CV includes Killua in Hunter x Hunter, Ray in The Promised Neverland, and Himeno in Chainsaw Man. Mu Qing is the mysterious boy at the centre of the film’s mystery, and his connection to the deceased consort is the thread Maomao has to unravel.

An Original Story, Written by the Author Herself

The screenplay is a fully original work by Hyūganatsu, the author of the Apothecary Diaries light novels — not an adaptation of an existing arc, but a story she describes as “more like the first draft of the novel.” Production is by the same team at Toho Animation STUDIO and OLM who built the television series. With Season 3 Part 1 confirmed for October 2026 and Part 2 in April 2027 — both expected on Crunchyroll — the film slots into the gap and gives fans an extra chapter while they wait for the next arc.

Japan Premiere on 11 December — International Window TBA

The premiere is Japan-only for now, with no international theatrical or streaming date announced. SAO: Integral Domain — New Original Film Announced for 2028

Kirito and Asuna are heading back to the big screen — and this time, it is not a retelling. Aniplex has revealed Sword Art Online the Movie – Integral Domain –, a completely original theatrical story set beyond the Alicization arc, with a 2028 cinema release confirmed. Full staff, the teaser visual, and a first teaser trailer all dropped on 7 July 2026 via the Aniplex official channels, making this the most concrete look yet at where the SAO franchise goes after the TV series concluded its main storyline.

The First Fully Original SAO Film Since Ordinal Scale

This is a significant distinction worth flagging for fans: Integral Domain is not an adaptation of existing light novel chapters. That puts it in the same category as Ordinal Scale (2017) — a story written specifically for the cinema, with original screenwriting direction from creator Reki Kawahara. The two Progressive films (2021 and 2022) adapted the Progressive reboot light novels, so this is genuinely new territory.

The Aniplex official page describes the premise simply: “the story moves to a new stage” — set directly after the events of the Alicization / War of Underworld arc. No plot details beyond that have been released yet, but Kawahara is providing the story concept, so this is the author’s own vision for what happens next to Kirito and Asuna rather than a spin-off scripted by a different writer.

What Singapore SAO Fans Need to Know

No international theatrical dates have been announced beyond the 2028 Japan release window, and no Southeast Asia distribution partners have been named yet. That said, every major SAO theatrical release has made it to Singapore: Ordinal Scale screened here in 2017, and both Progressive films received local cinema runs as well — so a Singapore theatrical release is realistic, just unconfirmed.

If you are behind on the series, the 2028 release gives you time to work through Alicization and War of Underworld before the film’s story picks up. Crunchyroll carries both arcs for streaming in Singapore.

Solo Leveling is heading to theatres. Solo Leveling: Beyond the System, a brand-new anime theatrical film, is officially in production — announced at the Crunchyroll Showcase at Anime Expo 2026 on 3 July by Aleks Le, Sung Jinwoo’s English voice actor, who introduced a teaser concept video and the film’s first key visual. A-1 Pictures, the studio behind Seasons 1 and 2, is back on animation.

What Beyond the System Is About

The title pulls from one of the series’ most beloved early moments: the Double Dungeon Arc, where a near-dead Jinwoo first received the System that would reshape his life. Beyond the System picks up after Season 2’s Ant King raid on Jeju Island and follows Jinwoo back to the Cartenon Temple — the original dungeon where everything started — to uncover the truth about the System that gave him his power.

The released key visual shows Jinwoo with his signature blue aura eyes glowing at an intensity that implies he has risen to a level of power that transcends the System itself. A theatrical Japan premiere is targeted for 2027; an international cinema schedule, including Singapore, has not yet been announced.

Season 3 Confirmed Too

Alongside the movie announcement, D&C Media confirmed Solo Leveling Season 3 is in development, with an expected release window of 2027 to 2028. The franchise is expanding on two fronts simultaneously — the movie appears to be a standalone bridge story rather than a replacement for the main season arc, which will continue with its own release.

What the Apothecary Diaries Movie Is About

The film’s full title is Gekijouban Kusuriya no Hitorigoto: Boki no Hihou (劇場版 薬屋のひとりごと 亡妃の秘宝) — The Apothecary Diaries: The Secret Treasure of the Deceased Consort. Unlike many anime films that adapt an existing arc, this one is an original story conceived by the franchise’s own light novel author, Natsu Hyuga.

The plot follows Maomao and Jinshi as they travel south to return the remains of a concubine who died in the imperial palace five years earlier to her homeland. They arrive in Minanzhou (未南州), a lively water city, and find themselves tangled up in secrets surrounding the consort’s preserved body, a hidden treasure buried somewhere in the city’s waterways, and a band of water pirates who are very much part of the story. New Character: Muqing, Voiced by Mariya Ise

Aoi Yuki (Maomao) and Takeo Otsuka (Jinshi) both return in their lead roles. Joining them is a new character: Muqing (沐清), a young boy described as holding the key to the mystery at the heart of the film. He is voiced by Mariya Ise, a veteran anime voice actress well known among Singapore fans for her roles as Killua Zoldyck in Hunter x Hunter and Levy McGarden in Fairy Tail. A 30-Year Friendship, Told Through Rotoscoped Animation

We Are Aliens (Japanese title: Ware Ware wa Uchūjin) follows two boys — Tsubasa and Kyotaro — who become inseparable friends in elementary school, only for a moment of jealousy and misunderstanding to drive them apart. The story spans more than thirty years, slowly revisiting the distance that grew between them and the long shadow it cast into adulthood.

The film runs 102 minutes and uses a distinctive hybrid approach: hand-drawn 2D animation blended with rotoscoping — a technique that traces over live-action footage to capture the tiny, spontaneous gestures of children that are notoriously hard to animate purely by hand. Director Kadowaki, known in Japan for his work on animated music videos (including Yoasobi’s “Comet”), makes his feature directorial debut here, also handling writing, storyboarding, and editing himself.

The film is a Japan–France co-production between Nothing New (Japan) and Miyu Productions (France), with Paris-based Charades managing international sales.

A Rare Double: Cannes Directors’ Fortnight and Annecy Competition

Very few anime films land at Cannes. We Are Aliens had its world premiere in the Directors’ Fortnight (Quinzaine des Cinéastes) sidebar at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival — one of the most prestigious slots in world cinema for independent work. It was also selected for the Feature Film Competition at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival 2026, the world’s leading animation festival. Who Is Ave Mujica?

Ave Mujica is a five-member unit within the BanG Dream! franchise, each member performing under a masked alter-ego persona. The unit — Sakiko Togawa (Obivionis), Uika Misumi (Doloris), Mutsumi Wakaba (Mortis), Nyamu Yutenji (Amoris), and Umiri Yahata (Timoris) — built their fanbase through the Ave Mujica anime that aired earlier this year, and won fans over with their gothic-inflected rock sound that sets them apart from BanG Dream!’s brighter acts.

What’s Ahead for Ave Mujica and BanG Dream!

The second half of 2026 is stacked for the franchise:

  • BanG Dream! Ave Mujica: prima aurora — the theatrical film continuing where the anime left off — premieres in Japan in Fall 2026. An international release via Crunchyroll has not been confirmed yet but is widely anticipated.
  • Live Tour “Virtus” — October 24–25, 2026 at Keio Arena Tokyo.
  • International Tour — Taipei dates confirmed for August 8–9, 2026.
  • MyGO!!!!! sequel anime — the sister band’s follow-up season is slated for January 2027.
  • BanG Dream! Our Notes — a new mobile game with global availability planned for 2026; no confirmed Singapore release date yet.

Last words

There is no Singapore date on the Virtus tour just yet — but Taipei in August is close enough that fans in Singapore may want to keep tabs on the official BanG Dream! site and Ave Mujica’s social channels for any additional international stops. The prima aurora film is the bigger watch: with Crunchyroll holding SEA streaming rights for the franchise, an English-subtitled release for Singapore viewers looks likely. For now, Ave Música is available to import, and “The Whole Blue World” is streaming on the official Ave Mujica YouTube channel.
