The teaser PV dropped via the official Toaru Project YouTube channel, and it looks like exactly the gritty, high-octane spinoff the franchise deserves.

What Is Toaru Anbu no Item?

Toaru Anbu no Item is a spinoff set within the same Academy City as A Certain Magical Index and A Certain Scientific Railgun, focusing on ITEM — a clandestine unit of espers who operate in the city’s dark underside. Unlike the heroic framing of Misaka Mikoto’s story in Railgun, ITEM works in morally grey territory: assassinations, covert ops, and the brutal realities of Academy City’s shadow organisations. The group was memorably featured during the Sisters Arc and Battle Royale Arc in Railgun S, making this a direct spotlight for four fan-favourite characters.

The series is based on Kazuma Kamachi’s light novel of the same name, published under ASCII Media Works’ Dengeki Bunko imprint.

Premiere Details

The series premieres on October 9, 2026 on Tokyo MX and other broadcast channels in Japan. International streaming rights haven’t been announced yet — though given J.C.STAFF’s existing relationship with Crunchyroll for the Toaru franchise, it’s the most likely home outside Japan. Bonus: A Certain Scientific Railgun Season 4 Is Also in Production

In February 2025, it was confirmed that A Certain Scientific Railgun Season 4 is also in development — also at J.C.STAFF, also under Tatsuyuki Nagai’s direction. No premiere window has been announced yet for Railgun S4, but with Anbu no Item now locked in for October 2026, the Toaru universe is clearly entering a major new phase of anime content.

Science SARU’s The Ghost in the Shell anime is in its final stretch — and today, 24 August 2026, the series adds a new chapter to its music story. The image song “po-ai feat. Mirai Moriyama” has been released as a digital single, accompanied by a special promotion video directed by series director MOKOCHAN. The track was composed, arranged, and written by Taisei Iwasaki, who serves as the series’ music director and main composer throughout the run. Vocals are provided by Mirai Moriyama, a Kobe-born dancer and stage actor with an unconventional presence that feels right for this franchise’s cerebral, body-questioning world.

“po-ai” isn’t a surprise addition: it already served as the ending theme for the full-length feature footage shown at advance screenings overseas, including the series’ world premiere at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival in France earlier this year. The source light novel series by Ichika Isshiki has surpassed 2.2 million copies in circulation across print and digital formats. Animation is once again handled by ACGT, the studio behind Season 1’s 12-episode run, which aired from October to December 2023.

This is Episode 5 of The Calamity arc (Part 4 of TYBW overall), and the title “Defend You” hits different knowing who Ichigo is protecting. The episode picks up the Ichigo vs Yhwach confrontation at Wahr Welt — the Wandenreich’s floating fortress above Soul Society — with stakes that couldn’t be higher.

Episode preview material confirms we’ll see Ichigo deploy Gran Rey Cero fused with Getsuga Tensho — a combination technique that draws on both his Arrancar-level hollow energy and his Shinigami blade instincts simultaneously. What to Expect from Season 2

The Nikko Kegon Falls Arc shifts the battlefield from the urban streets of Season 1 to a more remote, mountainous locale with deep mythological significance. Protagonist Shiki Ichinose and his oni companions will face off against a new wave of threats, and the season is confirmed to introduce several new oni and human characters that manga readers have been anticipating since the adaptation was announced.

Think The Apothecary Diaries energy, but with a distinct flavour of its own.

When and Where to Watch

The Story: When the Last War Ends the Wrong Way

Maiden Blood opens on Armageddon — the final war between good and evil, whose destined outcome was overturned. A desperate wish, “I don’t want to die,” gave power to the Evil God. Eight billion human beings were sacrificed, leaving only a handful of survivors condemned to be toyed with as playthings of that god.

At the centre of the story are two sisters. Eva — voiced by Iori Saeki — is the older sister, unable to walk since birth. Epica — voiced by Yukari Anzai — is the younger, described as the world’s strongest blood warrior, whose very soul has been stolen. Seiji Kishi directs, bringing the same instinct for character-driven darkness that shaped Persona 4 The Animation, Assassination Classroom, and Angel Beats!. Scripts are by Makoto Uezu, his long-standing collaborator on all three of those titles. Original character designs come from illustrator LAM, whose sharp, stylised work suits the anime’s blood-and-shadow aesthetic perfectly. Animation production is by Polygon Pictures, known for the distinct 3D CG style they brought to Blame!, Knights of Sidonia, and the GODZILLA anime trilogy.

Most striking for Singapore gamers and anime fans alike: the music is co-composed by Keiichi Okabe, one of the creative minds behind the NieR: Automata and NieR: Replicant soundtracks. He is joined by Kuniyuki Takahashi and Taichi Jōraku. If Maiden Blood carries even a fraction of those games’ haunting atmosphere into its score, the audio alone is reason to watch.

A 2027 premiere window is confirmed; the specific season and international streaming details have not yet been announced. Pony Canyon stated that global distribution information will follow separately. Polygon Pictures titles have a solid track record on international platforms — Blame! went to Netflix globally — so an announcement covering Singapore availability should not be far behind.
