Ghost of Tsushima: Legends Anime Reveals Striking Character Art at AX 2026

Crunchyroll had a packed stage at Anime Expo 2026 this weekend, but the image that’s still echoing around the convention floor came from one announcement: the first character visuals for Ghost of Tsushima: Legends, the 2027 anime series heading to Crunchyroll. Drawn by Takashi Okazaki — the artist and creator behind Afro Samurai — the four portraits are unlike anything else shown at the convention this year. Dark, dense, folklore-soaked, and rendered in Okazaki’s unmistakable ink-heavy style, they make a statement before a single frame of animation has screened.

Takashi Okazaki’s Designs Are the Real Story

If you know Okazaki’s work on Afro Samurai, you already have a feel for what these visuals are doing. They abandon the clean character-sheet aesthetic common to anime announcements entirely and lean into something older and more tactile — ink-black linework, parchment textures, dramatic negative space, and slashes of blood-red calligraphy bleeding across each portrait.

The group visual alone shows you the tonal distance this series is travelling from Ghost of Tsushima’s original campaign. These are not the grounded, historically textured samurai designs of Jin Sakai’s story. They are supernatural in every line — an archer wrapped in bone and shadow, a kitsune-masked figure bristling with blades, and looming behind them both, something far older and more dangerous. The aesthetic signals that Legends is taking its folklore inspirations seriously.

This Isn’t Jin Sakai’s Story — and That’s the Right Call

The anime adapts Ghost of Tsushima: Legends, the free co-op mode added to the original game that diverged sharply from Jin’s solo campaign. Where the main game told a grounded story about a samurai fighting the Mongol invasion, Legends dropped players into Japanese mythology — fighting oni, navigating the spirit realm, and teaming up across four archetypes (Samurai, Hunter, Ronin, and Assassin) in missions drawn from folktales.

That supernatural register gives the anime a distinct identity rather than retreading ground Jin’s story already covered. It also hands Okazaki, director Takanobu Mizuno, and writer Gen Urobuchi a canvas that suits their strengths. Urobuchi built his reputation on dark mythological drama — from Puella Magi Madoka Magica‘s deconstruction of the magical girl genre to Fate/Zero‘s brutal war of Noble Phantasms to the oppressive world of Psycho-Pass. A series rooted in supernatural horror and Japanese folklore is exactly where his storytelling lands hardest, and his involvement here is the single biggest creative signal that this won’t be a safe franchise tie-in.

The Team Behind It

The full creative lineup, confirmed by Crunchyroll:

  • Director: Takanobu Mizuno — previously directed Star Wars: Visions “The Duel” at Kamikaze Douga, which showcased the studio’s capacity for stylised, high-impact short-form animation
  • Series Composition & Script: Gen Urobuchi and Satoshi Maejima (both of Nitro Plus)
  • Character Design: Takashi Okazaki (creator of Afro Samurai)
  • Animation Studio: KAMIKAZE DOUGA (also known for Batman Ninja, Batman Ninja vs. The Yakuza League, Sand Land The Series)
  • Production: HAYATE Inc., Crunchyroll, Aniplex, Sony Music, PlayStation Productions

Crunchyroll in 2027 — and What This Means for Singapore

Ghost of Tsushima: Legends the anime is set for a 2027 premiere exclusively on Crunchyroll. No specific window has been announced beyond the year, and no trailer has dropped yet — the AX 2026 reveal was character visuals only. Given the production lineup, a full teaser is likely still months away.

For Singapore’s PlayStation and anime communities, this is one to watch closely. Ghost of Tsushima was one of the biggest PlayStation exclusives to land in the region — the game’s Japanese aesthetic resonated strongly with Southeast Asian players — and the Urobuchi-Okazaki-Kamikaze Douga combination is the kind of creative pedigree that gets the anime community here genuinely excited. Urobuchi’s past work has consistently performed well in Singapore, and a series threading dark folklore through prestige PlayStation IP feels well-calibrated for this audience.

We’ll keep tracking this one as more details emerge. For the latest anime news, check our Manga & Anime section.

Solo Leveling: Beyond the System Movie Is Officially in Production

Solo Leveling is heading to theatres. Solo Leveling: Beyond the System, a brand-new anime theatrical film, is officially in production — announced at the Crunchyroll Showcase at Anime Expo 2026 on 3 July by Aleks Le, Sung Jinwoo’s English voice actor, who introduced a teaser concept video and the film’s first key visual. A-1 Pictures, the studio behind Seasons 1 and 2, is back on animation.

What Beyond the System Is About

The title pulls from one of the series’ most beloved early moments: the Double Dungeon Arc, where a near-dead Jinwoo first received the System that would reshape his life. Beyond the System picks up after Season 2’s Ant King raid on Jeju Island and follows Jinwoo back to the Cartenon Temple — the original dungeon where everything started — to uncover the truth about the System that gave him his power.

The released key visual shows Jinwoo with his signature blue aura eyes glowing at an intensity that implies he has risen to a level of power that transcends the System itself. A theatrical Japan premiere is targeted for 2027; an international cinema schedule, including Singapore, has not yet been announced.

Season 3 Confirmed Too

Alongside the movie announcement, D&C Media confirmed Solo Leveling Season 3 is in development, with an expected release window of 2027 to 2028. The franchise is expanding on two fronts simultaneously — the movie appears to be a standalone bridge story rather than a replacement for the main season arc, which will continue with its own release.

For Singapore fans, both seasons streamed on Crunchyroll, which is fully available here, and Season 2’s Arise from the Shadows cour was among the most-discussed anime in the local community this year. The same distribution pipeline makes Crunchyroll the likely home for Beyond the System‘s digital release as well, though a local theatrical run would depend on distribution partners in the region.

The Production Team

The core production lineup remains intact: A-1 Pictures on animation, co-produced by Aniplex, Netmarble, D&C MEDIA, Kakao Piccoma, and Crunchyroll. That same team delivered the shadow army sequences and dungeon boss fights that became some of the most shared anime clips of 2024 and 2025 — Singapore fan servers included. More details — director, full cast, release windows — are expected as production progresses.

Stay tuned to our anime and manga coverage for every update on Beyond the System and Season 3 as they land.

Steel Ball Run 2nd Stage Hits Netflix on 25 September

JoJo fans, mark your calendars: Steel Ball Run’s 2nd Stage launches on Netflix on 25 September 2026, with new episodes dropping every Friday. The date was locked in at an Anime Expo 2026 panel at the Crypto.com Arena on 3 July, where a brand-new trailer dropped and composer Yugo Kanno performed live — the biggest Steel Ball Run news since Stage 1’s 47-minute premiere special back in March.

What the Steel Ball Run 2nd Stage Covers

The 2nd Stage sends Johnny Joestar and Gyro Zeppeli into one of the race’s most brutal stretches: nearly 750 miles across the Arizona Desert through a region locals call the “Devil’s Palm,” where racers have been found dead under unexplained circumstances. The trailer preview revealed looks at Hot Pants and Mountain Tim, two fan-favourite additions who take on significant roles from here, as well as a first glimpse at the growing menace of President Funny Valentine.

Eleven episodes will cover Stage 2 and Stage 3 of the Steel Ball Run race combined, meaning the adaptation moves through a significant chunk of Hirohiko Araki’s manga at a tight but purposeful pace.

JoJo Fridays Return — and the Production Team Behind Them

The weekly Friday release schedule — “JoJo Fridays” — is back for the first time since Golden Wind. For Singapore JoJo communities that ran Friday watch parties during the Golden Wind run, this is a proper homecoming. Directors Yasuhiro Kimura and Hideya Takahashi (who helmed Golden Wind) are returning, as is composer Yugo Kanno, who gave both Golden Wind and Stone Ocean their sonic identity. English dub voice actors Daman Mills (Johnny Joestar) and Kaiji Tang (Gyro Zeppeli) also appeared at the panel.

Steel Ball Run is consistently ranked by fans as the peak of Araki’s writing — a race across 19th-century America that gradually reveals itself as one of the most emotionally ambitious stories in the franchise. The confirmed date and weekly cadence mean Singapore fans can now plan around it properly.

How to Watch in Singapore

Steel Ball Run 2nd Stage streams on Netflix from 25 September 2026, new episode every Friday. Netflix is available in Singapore with no regional restrictions on this series — it’s a global simultaneous release. Stage 1 (the 47-minute opening special from March) is already on the platform; catch up before the weekly run kicks off in September. Find more anime and manga news in our coverage hub.

MASHLE Season 3 Premieres January 2027 — AX Trailer Confirms Final Exam Arc

Mash Burnedead has one more impossible obstacle to clear — MASHLE: Magic and Muscles Season 3 is premiering in January 2027, confirmed at Anime Expo 2026 on 2 July alongside the series’ first official teaser trailer, now live on the official Aniplex YouTube channel.

MASHLE: Magic and Muscles Season 3 First Teaser Trailer — via アニプレックス チャンネル on YouTube (Japanese)

MASHLE Season 3: What the Tri-Magic-Athalon Arc Is

The full title is MASHLE: Magic and Muscles — Tri-Magic-Athalon Divine Visionary Final Exam Arc. If you have been keeping up with the manga, you know exactly how high the stakes climb here. The Tri-Magic-Athalon is a three-versus-three magical duel tournament that serves as the final selection process for the next Divine Visionaries — the most powerful mages in the land. It is, in other words, exactly the kind of nonsensically dangerous high-stakes event that Mash approaches with the same blank calm he uses to eat cream puffs.

Season 3 also formally introduces Domina Blowelive, a new antagonist who gets her own character visual in the teaser — and who looks designed to make Mash’s deadpan expression look even more deadpan by contrast.

Production: Same Core Team, One New Name

Director Tomoya Tanaka returns to A-1 Pictures alongside series composer Yōsuke Kuroda and music composer Masaru Yokoyama — so the production continuity that kept Seasons 1 and 2 looking and sounding consistent carries over. The one personnel change is the character designer: Chiaki Furuzumi — who served as sub-character designer on both seasons of Solo Leveling — steps in to replace Hisashi Higashijima. Judging by the teaser, the visual identity stays close to what fans know, but the full promotional run will be the real test.

The full returning voice cast is confirmed: Chiaki Kobayashi as Mash Burnedead, Kaito Ishikawa as Lance Crown, Takuya Eguchi as Dot Barrett, Reiji Kawashima as Finn Ames, Reina Ueda as Lemon Irvine, and Yuki Kaji as Rayne Ames.

How to Watch MASHLE Season 3 in Singapore

Crunchyroll streamed both previous seasons in Singapore and across Southeast Asia, and Season 3 will follow the same route. Both Seasons 1 and 2 are available on Crunchyroll now if you need a re-run before January. An exact premiere date and simulcast schedule will be confirmed closer to broadcast.

MASHLE’s source manga — originally serialised in Weekly Shōnen Jump and concluded in 2023 — is also available digitally if you cannot wait to find out how the tournament resolves.

The premise is simple and delightful: welcome Bananya visitors to your pad, play mini-games to earn coins, and leave out toys and treats to rack up Buddy Points with each little banana-dwelling cat.

The more Buddy Points a Bananya accumulates, the longer it sticks around — and the better the gifts it leaves behind. Reach Best Buddies status and you unlock a sleepover; hit Best Buddies Forever and something even more special awaits (you’ll have to play to find out). It’s the kind of low-key, pick-up-and-put-down mobile experience that cozy game fans have been waiting for from an anime IP this charming.

  • Launch window: Summer 2026
  • Pre-registration: Google Play now open; App Store coming soon

The first Bananya episode aired on 4 July 2016. Exactly ten years later — on 4 July 2026 at 10AM — the Bananya 10th Anniversary anime special will world-premiere at Anime Expo before landing on Crunchyroll on 9 July.

The official synopsis drops the Bananyas into an adventure: the player character wakes to find they’ve somehow become a Bananya themselves, then sets off through forest, mountain, and open land in search of missing treasures. It’s a fresh story that expands the lore while keeping the dreamy, low-stakes tone that made the original shorts such a cult favourite.

The special features an all-star Japanese voice cast:

  • Stray Bananya — Atsumi Tanezaki (Anya Forger in SPY x FAMILY)
  • Little Bananya — Yuina Ito (Zundamon)
  • Tall Bananya — Toshiyuki Morikawa (Minato Namikaze in NARUTO)

The commemorative theme song is “nyanderful nyanderland” performed by TAMAchan, with Bananya’s character voice by Yuki Kaji.

Further 10th anniversary announcements — including merchandise, events, and other celebratory projects — will roll out through the rest of the year via the official TMS Entertainment and Bananya channels on X, Facebook, and Instagram.

The world premiere screening takes place at JW Marriott Diamond from 4:45 to 6:05 PM PDT on 3 July (7:45–9:05 AM SGT on 4 July). Chihiro Rokuhira: A Swordsmith’s Son on a Path of Revenge

Kagurabachi follows Chihiro Rokuhira, the son of a legendary swordsmith who sets out on a blood-soaked quest for vengeance after tragedy strikes his family. Armed with one of his father’s famed Enchanted Blades — a sentient weapon that manifests as a black goldfish when dormant — Chihiro navigates a world of sorcerers, criminal syndicates, and supernatural threats. The manga was created by Takeru Hokazono and has run in Weekly Shonen Jump since September 2023, selling over 4 million copies and winning the Next Manga Award 2024. The anime announcement trailer crossed 6 million views in under 24 hours — a number that signals just how long this fandom has been waiting.

The Studio and Creative Team

Animation is handled by Studio Cypic — the recently rebranded Cygames Pictures — with Tetsuya Takeuchi as director. Takeuchi is known to long-time anime fans as the person behind the legendary Rock Lee vs Gaara fight episode in Naruto, so expectations for the action choreography here are sky-high. Character design is by Keigo Sasaki (Blue Exorcist, The Seven Deadly Sins). The confirmed cast includes Tomokazu Seki as Chihiro’s father Kunishige Rokuhira and Katsuyuki Konishi as Togo Shiba.

Black Clover Season 2 Returns in October — Episode 1 Premieres at Anime Expo This Saturday

After five years, one movie, and the conclusion of Yuki Tabata’s manga, Black Clover Season 2 is officially happening — and it’s coming sooner than many fans expected. The new season is confirmed for an October 2026 broadcast start, with Studio Pierrot returning to handle animation and the full original voice cast reprising their roles.

Episode 1 Premieres at Anime Expo This Saturday

Before the October broadcast begins, the first episode gets its world premiere at Anime Expo 2026 in Los Angeles this Saturday, 4 July, from 1:30 PM to 2:30 PM Pacific time. Director Ayataka Tanemura and Asta’s voice actor Gakuto Kajiwara will be at the panel in person. Singapore fans watching the AX news feed live: that session runs Sunday 5 July at 4:30 AM SGT — probably one for the truly dedicated.

The panel will include the episode 1 screening and additional announcements, so expect new details about the season — episode count, OP/ED themes, and possibly a premiere date — to surface over the weekend.

The Spade Kingdom Raid Arc — Where the Story Goes

Season 2 picks up where Season 1 left off in 2021: the Clover Kingdom’s Magic Knights launching their all-out assault on the Spade Kingdom to rescue Captain Yami and William Vangeance. Asta’s Devil Union with Liebe — teased extensively in the trailers — is the centrepiece of the new season’s power scaling, alongside Yuno’s Spirit Dive and Nacht’s Devil Unite techniques.

Unlike the original run, there’s no concern about the anime outpacing the source material. Tabata’s manga wrapped up after over 11 years of serialisation, which means the production team has the full story to work with — a significant advantage that should translate into a tighter, more purposeful adaptation.

The production team for Season 2: director Ayataka Tanemura (who also directed Black Clover: Sword of the Wizard King), series scripts by Keiichiro Ochi, character design by Itsuko Takeda and Kumiko Tokunaga, and music by Minako Seki.

Where Singapore Fans Can Watch

Crunchyroll has announced streaming rights for the US and other international regions, but explicitly excludes Asia from its distribution deal. That means Singapore fans will need to look elsewhere for a legal stream — the platform for Asia has not been officially confirmed at the time of writing. The original series was available in Singapore via both Crunchyroll and Amazon Prime Video, so Prime Video or another regional service is the most likely home for Season 2 in our market. Watch the official Black Clover social channels for a regional streaming announcement closer to October.

We’ll be following this one closely as Anime Expo announcements roll in over the weekend. In the meantime, catch up on the other anime arriving this season — the summer 2026 slate is stacked.

Thunder 3 Anime Hits Netflix 8 July — What to Expect

If your Netflix queue needs a fresh weekly obsession this July, Thunder 3 (サンダー3) might be exactly that. The isekai mystery series — based on Yuki Ikeda’s manga from Monthly Shōnen Magazine — debuts globally on Netflix on 8 July 2026, with Singapore subscribers able to stream from day one.

What Is Thunder 3? The Manga That Just Ended

Thunder 3 ran in Kodansha’s Monthly Shōnen Magazine from May 2022 to June 2026, wrapping up its complete 8-volume run literally weeks before the anime adaptation premieres. Written and illustrated by Yuki Ikeda, the series sits at the intersection of isekai, mystery, and science fantasy — a more interesting combination than it might first sound.

The story follows three inseparable middle schoolers — Pyontaro Tezuka, Hiroshi Ochanomizu, and Tsubame Azuma, nicknamed the “Small Three” — who stumble upon a mysterious disc belonging to their teacher, Dr. Doc. Playing it unleashes an alien dragonfly from their TV screen, and in the chaos Pyontaro’s younger sister Futaba and the family pet are dragged into a parallel world and captured by its extraterrestrial inhabitants. What starts as ordinary boyhood friendship turns into an interdimensional rescue mission.

Netflix, Fuji TV, and a Surprising Director

Thunder 3 | Official Trailer — via Netflix Anime on YouTube

The TV anime premieres on Fuji TV’s +Ultra block from 8 July 2026, broadcasting every Wednesday night, with Netflix handling global streaming from the same date. Singapore viewers can jump straight in on launch day — no region restrictions.

The creative team is worth noting. Per the Anime Expo 2026 press release coverage, Hiroyuki Seshita directs — the same filmmaker behind the bleak, atmospheric sci-fi of Blame! (2017) and Ajin: Demi-Human on Netflix. Series composition is handled by Hiroshi Seko (Witch Hat Atelier, Rooster Fighter), with studio UNEDN producing the animation. That pairing of a hard-sci-fi director with a chibi-inflected adventure story is one of the more unexpected creative decisions of the summer anime season.

North American Premiere at Anime Expo 2026

Thunder 3 gets its North American premiere at Anime Expo 2026 on 4 July — Room 408AB at the Los Angeles Convention Center, 3:15 PM PDT — with Seshita and Seko present for the panel. For Singapore fans weighing up a new seasonal watch, that screening lands just four days before the Netflix global drop, so any buzz coming out of LA will be very fresh when the series goes live on 8 July.

How to Watch Thunder 3 in Singapore

Thunder 3 is a Netflix exclusive in Singapore from 8 July 2026, with new episodes dropping weekly. The manga source is fully concluded at 8 volumes — available digitally through Kodansha USA’s Azuki platform for anyone who wants to read ahead or revisit the story after the credits roll. Magic Knight Rayearth Is Back: 2026 Anime Reboot Premieres at Anime Expo

After more than 30 years, the Magic Knights are summoned once more. CLAMP’s beloved shojo isekai Magic Knight Rayearth is getting a full anime reboot — confirmed for October 2026 on TV Asahi, with an all-star production team, a stacked new cast, and a world premiere at Anime Expo 2026 on 4 July in Los Angeles.

What Is Magic Knight Rayearth?

Originally a manga by CLAMP — the all-female artist collective behind Cardcaptor Sakura, Chobits, and xxxHolicMagic Knight Rayearth ran in Kodansha’s Nakayoshi magazine from 1993 to 1996 across 29 chapters. The story follows three middle-school girls — Hikaru Shidou, Umi Ryuuzaki, and Fuu Hououji — who are suddenly transported from Tokyo Tower to the magical world of Cephiro, where they must become legendary Magic Knights to save the captive Princess Emeraude. The original 1994 anime series became a touchstone for a generation of fans across Asia, blending magical girl trappings with mecha and high fantasy in a way that felt genuinely fresh at the time.

Decades of fan demand later, TMS Entertainment and E&H production have answered the call. The new series is planned and produced by UNLIMITED PRODUCE by TMS and animated by E&H production — the studio founded by Sunghoo Park, director of Jujutsu Kaisen Season 1 and Fire Force. That pedigree alone signals this is not a cheap anniversary cash-in.

The Dream Team Behind the Reboot

Director Yui Miura leads the project, with Shigeru Murakoshi handling series composition. The name that will excite the most fans, though, is the composer: Yuki Kajiura — the force behind the soundtracks of Sword Art Online, Fate/Zero, Puella Magi Madoka Magica, and Kagurabachi — is scoring the series alongside Takumi Ozawa and Shiho Terada. Character design goes to Satomi Watanabe.

The voice cast is equally impressive. The three leads are played by Ayane Sakura (Hikaru Shidou), Rumi Okubo (Umi Ryuuzaki), and Rie Takahashi (Fuu Hououji). A second wave of casting announced in June 2026 added Saori Hayami as Princess Emeraude, Yuuki Ono as the antagonist Zagato, and Mika Kikuchi as Mokona — the series’ iconic rabbit-like mascot creature.

World Premiere at Anime Expo 2026 — 4 July

The Anime Expo 2026 full schedule, released today (27 June), confirms that the world premiere of the new Magic Knight Rayearth anime is set for 12:00 PM on 4 July at the JW Diamond hall in Los Angeles. Special guests attending include Rie Takahashi and Saori Hayami, who will be present for the screening of the first two episodes. Additional new details about the series are expected to be unveiled at the event. Tickets for Anime Expo (running 2–5 July at the Los Angeles Convention Center) can be found at the official Anime Expo website.

What Singapore Fans Need to Know

The series broadcasts on TV Asahi every Wednesday at 11:45 PM JST within the IMAnimation W programming block, starting October 2026. International streaming has not been confirmed yet — but given that the original Magic Knight Rayearth anime is currently on Netflix, a digital route for the reboot seems plausible. No Singapore or Southeast Asia streaming announcement has been made at the time of writing; check back as details emerge closer to the October air date.

For fans who grew up in the 90s watching CLAMP’s work on local TV, this reboot hits differently. With Yuki Kajiura’s orchestral signature woven through it and a studio with recent shonen action credentials steering the visuals, the new Magic Knight Rayearth is shaping up as one of the more serious revival attempts in recent memory — rather than just a nostalgia play. Keep an eye on the AX premiere on 4 July for the first real look at what this reboot has in store.
