The one Chinese fantasy IP most likely to fill an Anime Festival Asia panel outside The Three-Body Problem is finally getting its big game. Lord of Mysteries, the SPARK NEXA MMORPG based on Cuttlefish That Loves Diving’s Victorian-occult web novel, opens its mainland-China servers on Friday, 21 August 2026 — the same date Singapore fans have circled on their calendar, since we share the timezone.
It is a launch worth flagging even though the servers do not officially reach Southeast Asia yet. The novel is a giant among Chinese web fiction — the English translation lives on Webnovel — and the B.CMay Pictures donghua adaptation has been quietly one of Crunchyroll’s best-reviewed 2025 debuts, with a simulcast schedule that put Singapore viewers on the same weekly slot as Japan. A lot of that audience has been watching this game since the first trailer.
The Lord of Mysteries game release date and platforms
SPARK NEXA has confirmed the open beta — the launch that stays live, not a wipe test — goes live on 21 August 2026 in mainland China across PC, Android and iOS, with full cross-play between all three. Pre-download and character pre-creation opened on 19 August at 12:00 China Standard Time, per the studio’s official launch page.
The game had already cleared 2.1 million pre-registrations on TapTap before opening its doors, according to the same page — numbers that put it in the same conversation as the biggest domestic MMORPG launches of the year. Console versions on PS5, Xbox and Switch 2 have not been announced.
What the game actually is: Beyonders, Pathways and Tingen City
For anyone coming in fresh from the anime: Lord of Mysteries is set in a Victorian-Steampunk world where certain people drink alchemical potions and become Beyonders, unlocking supernatural powers along one of 22 branching Pathways. Each Pathway has ten Sequences, and the lower your Sequence number, the closer you get to god-tier abilities — at the constant risk of losing your mind and turning into a monster. It is the hook that made the novel work as a slow-burn horror mystery, and SPARK NEXA has built the entire MMORPG around it.
The playable version keeps the setting’s home city, Tingen, as the central hub. Trailers show a full Unreal Engine 5 recreation — gaslit tram lines, canal-side markets, a foggy dockside — with players building their own Beyonder, joining an investigation-driven main story, and taking on set-piece bosses lifted directly from the novel’s bigger encounters. Can Singaporean players actually get in?
Here is the honest answer: not through the front door on day one. Friday’s launch is a mainland-China client only, with mainland verification and a mainland payment stack. SPARK NEXA has an official global page collecting sign-ups, but no global date and no Southeast Asia partner have been announced. Singaporean fans importing games and gacha titles from China know the drill — it is doable, but it is not the same as pressing pre-order on the local store, and account, payment and language all become the player’s problem.
Realistically, most SG players who love the novel and the donghua are better served waiting for a confirmed global build, or catching the game vicariously through streams while the launch-week bugs get ironed out. The upside of the current launch is that it will finally answer the community’s biggest question — whether SPARK NEXA can turn one of the densest, most lore-heavy web novels in modern Chinese fiction into a co-op MMORPG without stripping the mystery out of it.
