Onimusha: Way of the Sword — “Severing Fates” Trailer Out, Demo Live Now

With Onimusha: Way of the Sword now just four weeks away, Capcom has released a new story trailer — Severing Fates — and opened a free playable demo. If you have been watching this one from the sidelines, now is the time to try it for yourself.

What “Severing Fates” Reveals

The new trailer centres on Yasui Konpiragu Shrine in Kyoto — a real landmark historically associated with the idea of en-kiri, the severing of bad relationships and ill fate. In the game, protagonist Musashi arrives to find a twisted supernatural presence feeding on innocent wishmakers, turning the shrine’s folklore into something far more sinister. The tone is unmistakably Onimusha: Edo-period dread, grotesque enemies, and lethal swordplay against a backdrop of crumbling woodwork and lantern light.

Demo Live Right Now — PC, PS5 and Xbox

The free demo is available right now on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam and Epic Games Store. A Nintendo Switch 2 demo has not been announced yet, though the full game launches on Switch 2 alongside the other platforms on 4 September 2026 — a date Capcom moved three weeks earlier than originally planned.

The demo should give a strong feel for the Soulslike-adjacent swordplay that sits at the heart of the game — deliberate, parry-heavy combat with a strong emphasis on reading enemy attack patterns. Gematsu reported the demo went live alongside the trailer drop today.

How Real Kyoto Shaped the Game

An in-depth report published today on AUTOMATON (Japanese) offers a fascinating look at how seriously Capcom took its Kyoto setting. The development team made on-site visits to four locations — Kiyomizu-dera, Rokudo Chinno-ji, Yasui Konpira-gu, and Kennin-ji — and the attention to detail borders on obsessive.

The Kiyomizu-dera stage, for instance, was built to match the exact number of floor boards of the real structure. One deliberate departure: the actual stage has a slight incline, which the team flattened slightly for smoother combat. More strikingly, because the stage involves violent fight sequences, Capcom coordinated with the temple authorities to have the sacred main statue’s doors closed in-game — the statue, visible to real-life visitors, does not appear during the battle. Capcom worked directly with the temple on this.

Read the full report at AUTOMATON (Japanese) — it is a rare window into how much research goes into recreating sacred spaces for entertainment.
