Onimusha is coming sooner than expected. Capcom officially moved the release date of Onimusha: Way of the Sword to 4 September 2026 — three weeks ahead of the original 25 September date. If you had your eye on this one, start clearing your weekend now.
Onimusha: Way of the Sword Release Date Moved Up
Capcom made the announcement on 2 July 2026 via an official IR press release, confirming the new launch date across all platforms. The company offered no detailed explanation for the change, but an earlier release is rarely bad news for fans who’ve been waiting two decades for a new Onimusha. As we reported when the game was first revealed, this marks the franchise’s first mainline entry since Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams in 2006 — a 20-year gap.

Miyamoto Musashi vs the Genma — The Story So Far
Set in an Edo-period Kyoto overrun by demonic Genma invaders, Way of the Sword casts players as the legendary swordsman Miyamoto Musashi — a real historical figure reimagined with an enchanted gauntlet that channels Oni power. Along the way he meets two companions, each based on real Japanese historical figures: Izumo no Okuni, famed as the founder of kabuki theatre, and Ono no Takamura, a venerable swordsman who wields a gauntlet of his own. The clash of history, myth and demon-slaying action is classic Onimusha territory.

The Onimusha series has sold over 9.1 million units cumulatively since the original PS2 launch in 2001. That fanbase runs deep in Singapore — the early PS2-era games were a staple at rental shops across Tampines, Jurong and Bugis — and Way of the Sword looks to recapture that dark, methodical sword-action feel with a modern engine.
Enemy Design: A Closer Look at the Genma

The game’s enemy design leans heavily into grotesque, winged Genma whose grotesque armour and blood-soaked blades feel like a natural evolution of the series’ original aesthetic. The Game Overview trailer released in June showcased a wide range of encounter types — from agile lesser demons to screen-filling bosses silhouetted against a blood moon.
