Nintendo’s September 9 Direct delivered one of its biggest surprises: Metroid Ravenous, the first all-new 2D Metroid game since Dread, launches on Nintendo Switch 2 on January 28, 2027. After years of waiting, Samus is back — and she’s hungrier than ever.
What Is Metroid Ravenous?
Metroid Ravenous is the direct sequel to Metroid Dread, developed once again by MercurySteam in collaboration with Nintendo. Picking up after the events of Dread, Samus finds herself stranded on an alien moon teeming with hostile creatures — and this time, she’s not just fighting to survive, she’s fighting to feed.
Samus is now fully voice-acted with substantial dialogue — a first since Metroid: Other M (2010) — and the tone is noticeably more intense. Her attitude in the reveal trailer tells you everything: this is a Samus pushed to her limits.
Eat or Be Eaten: Samus’ New Powers
The defining new mechanic in Ravenous is an energy absorption system that lets Samus drain life force directly from enemies. In cinematic finishing moments, she literally devours downed creatures — part of a survival loop where she must feed to replenish her power. The familiar parry mechanic from Dread returns, and the game retains the tight side-scrolling run-and-gun feel of its predecessor, now enhanced for the Switch 2’s hardware.
The reveal trailer shows a variety of environments on the alien moon — damp cave networks, open sandy plains, and bioluminescent underground chambers — hinting at a world that MercurySteam’s team has pushed well beyond Dread’s visual benchmark.
Three Amiibo, Two Editions at Launch
Nintendo is launching three Metroid Ravenous amiibo on January 28, 2027 alongside the game:
- Samus Aran
- Chozo Statue
- Samus in Metroid Suit (exclusive to the Special Edition)
The Special Edition bundles the game, a SteelBook case, and the exclusive Samus in Metroid Suit amiibo. No SGD pricing has been confirmed yet; UK pricing and full regional details are to be confirmed closer to release. Singapore fans should expect the standard and Special Edition to be stocked at major game retailers and electronics chains, as well as the Nintendo eShop.
Singapore Switch 2 Fans: Mark January 28
For Singapore gamers who played Metroid Dread on original Switch, Ravenous is the must-have follow-up — and it arrives exclusively on Switch 2. If you haven’t played Nintendo’s recent Switch 2 releases, this might be the reason to upgrade. The game is a Switch 2 exclusive, and with the absorption mechanic adding a fresh layer of strategy to an already razor-sharp formula, this one looks set to be a contender for Switch 2’s best games of early 2027.
