The live-action Legend of Zelda movie now has a locked-in April 30, 2027 worldwide release date — and the news came straight from Shigeru Miyamoto himself, posted on Nintendo’s official X account on September 7.
Miyamoto Steps In With a New Date
“This is Miyamoto. I would like to let you know that the worldwide theatrical release date for the live-action film of The Legend of Zelda has been moved up to April 30, 2027, from May 7,” Miyamoto wrote on Nintendo’s X account. “The team is working hard to deliver the film to everyone as soon as possible. There’s less than a year to go until release, so thank you for waiting.”
The date change brings the film one week earlier than the previously announced May 7 date. The wording — “moved up” rather than delayed — is a rare piece of good news in an industry that has handed out plenty of the opposite over the past couple of years, and it signals the production is in strong shape heading into its final stretch.
A Release Date With a Complicated History
The Legend of Zelda movie has changed dates more than once. The film was originally scheduled for March 26, 2027, before Nintendo pushed it back to May 7, 2027 citing production reasons. Yesterday’s announcement splits the difference, landing on April 30 — the kind of mid-Golden-Week slot that plays particularly well in Japan and positions the film ahead of the US summer blockbuster crush.
Filming itself wrapped earlier than expected. Sony Pictures confirmed at CinemaCon in April 2026 that principal photography on the movie had been completed in New Zealand. Post-production has been ongoing since then, and yesterday’s news suggests the edit is on track.
Cast: Link and Zelda Are Confirmed
Benjamin Evan Ainsworth plays Link, and Bo Bragason is Princess Zelda. The pair were revealed in November 2025 when Nintendo dropped the first official photos from the shoot — three stills showing the young actors in full Hylian costumes amid sweeping New Zealand countryside, complete with elven ears and Zelda’s signature bow and quiver.
Director Wes Ball — best known for helming the Maze Runner trilogy and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes (2024) — is behind the camera. The film is a co-production between Nintendo and Arad Productions, with Sony Pictures handling worldwide theatrical distribution. Following its theatrical and home-entertainment run, the film will stream on Netflix.
A Trailer Could Land Tonight
Nintendo’s Zelda 40th Anniversary Direct airs tonight, September 8, at 22:00 SGT. The 30-minute presentation is built around the franchise’s milestone birthday, and Nintendo has confirmed the show will include “initiatives that are not related to games” — widely read as a movie trailer or extended sizzle reel.
