FromSoftware’s shinobi epic finally gets the anime it deserves. Sekiro: No Defeat opened in Japanese theatres on 4 September 2026 for a three-week limited run — and Crunchyroll has confirmed it will stream the title globally, including Singapore, later this year.
What Is Sekiro: No Defeat?
The anime adapts FromSoftware‘s critically acclaimed 2019 game Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. Directed by Kenichi Kutsuna at studio Qzil.la — with screenplay by Takuya Sato and character designs by Takahiro Kishida — the project is produced by KADOKAWA and ARCH.
The story follows Wolf, a one-armed shinobi sworn to protect the young Divine Heir Kuro as the Interior Ministry closes in on Ashina. Daisuke Namikawa reprises the role of Wolf, with Kenjirō Tsuda returning as the conflicted Genichiro Ashina — both reprising their roles from the original game. Set in “the fractured landscape of Sengoku-era Japan,” the anime adapts the game’s story rather than spinning out an entirely new plot, which should please both veterans and newcomers drawn in by the visuals.
Hand-Drawn 2D Animation — No AI, Annecy-Recognised
The production is entirely hand-drawn 2D — the team made a point of confirming no AI was used in its creation. It screened at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival 2026’s Midnight Specials section, which is a strong signal that this is a serious cinematic production rather than a quick promotional tie-in. The theme track draws on late composer Ryuichi Sakamoto’s “Blu,” lending real atmosphere to the already moody Sengoku setting.
When Can Singapore Watch It on Crunchyroll?
Crunchyroll holds exclusive streaming rights for Sekiro: No Defeat worldwide outside Japan, China, Korea, Russia, and Belarus — which puts Singapore squarely in the window. No exact streaming date has been set as of 8 September 2026, but the theatrical run in Japan closes around 25 September, and global stream announcements typically follow the end of the theatrical window.
