As ever, the enigmatic Medicine Seller is at the centre of it all. Before he can draw his Exorcism Sword, he must identify a mononoke’s Form, Truth, and Reason — a ritual that demands pulling the truth out of those who would rather keep it buried. In a place built on controlled appearances, that process cuts through political scheming, suppressed grief, and deeply personal shame before the final confrontation arrives.
Chapter III premiered in Japanese theatres on 29 May 2026, where it took first place on Filmarks’ opening-day satisfaction ranking, per Netflix’s own announcement. The streaming version includes both the original Japanese audio with subtitles and a newly produced English dub, both available from day one on 29 September.
Directors, Studio, Cast, and Music
Chief Director Kenji Nakamura has guided the Medicine Seller’s story from the original 2007 TV series through all three films. Director Tomoaki Koshida handles in-film direction for Chapter III, with Yasumi Atarashi writing the screenplay. Animation is produced by Studio KAFKA and EOTA — the same combination responsible for the trilogy’s signature aesthetic: washi paper textures, hard ink outlines, and painterly colour washes that make every frame feel like a woodblock print brought to motion.
Hiroshi Kamiya returns as the voice of the Medicine Seller, a role he has inhabited across nearly two decades of Mononoke adaptations. Atsumi Tanezaki and Miyu Irino join as new cast members for Chapter III. Composer Taku Iwasaki provides the score, and AiNA THE END (avex trax) performs the theme song, titled “No Epilogue” — an apt choice for a story that resists clean endings.
The Trilogy on Netflix Singapore — Catch Up Before 29 September
The three chapters form a continuous story arc inside the Oku, but each focuses on a different woman from a completely different station in palace life. If you haven’t started the series, Chapters I and II are already on Netflix in Singapore now — around two hours of viewing total — and they establish the political atmosphere and supporting cast that Chapter III pays off. The original 2007 TV anime Mononoke (not currently on Netflix, but available on other platforms) gives useful background on the Medicine Seller’s character, though the films hold up as a standalone experience.
