Nine Years in the Making — A New Director Steps In

When Season 1 wrapped up in March 2017, followed by the theatrical film in February 2019, the story was clearly unfinished — the light novel series by Carlo Zen had volumes left to adapt. The announcement of Season 2 came in June 2021, but production took another five years to reach screens. The result is a 12-episode continuation produced again at Studio NUT, with Kenta Ihara returning for series composition and Yuji Hosogoe keeping the character designs consistent.

The most notable change is in the director’s chair: Takayuki Yukimoto takes over from Season 1’s Yutaka Uemura. Yukimoto’s appointment was announced at AnimeJapan 2026 alongside a new full trailer and cast reveals — the long development window apparently gave the new director room to push production values. The opening theme, “Why? RED induction” by MYTH & ROID (who also did Season 1’s “JINGO JUNGLE”), and the ending theme “Weiter! Weiter!” performed in-character by Tanya (Aoi Yuki) suggest the tone stays resolutely on-brand.

Where the Story Picks Up

Season 2 begins in autumn of 1926, with Episode 1 titled “Salamander Combat Unit” — dropping viewers straight into the Empire’s deteriorating strategic position as total, global warfare spreads. The 203rd Aerial Mage Battalion under Tanya’s command remains the Empire’s sharpest tool, but the odds are multiplying. The mysterious entity Being X continues to manoeuvre events to force the spiritually defiant Tanya toward submission, making every battlefield victory feel like a step toward a larger trap.

Returning cast members include Aoi Yuki as Tanya von Degurechaff, Saori Hayami as Viktoriya Ivanovna Serebryakov, Shinichiro Miki as Erich von Rerugen, Tessho Genda as Kurt von Rudersdorf, and Hochu Otsuka as Hans von Zettour. Season 2 also introduces two new characters — Mikehl and Liliâ — as the conflict expands beyond the Empire’s borders.

How to Watch in Singapore

Singapore fans have two good options from tomorrow. Crunchyroll carries the series with a simulcast for most international regions including Southeast Asia, while Ani-One Asia provides the dedicated regional stream for SEA audiences. New episodes drop on Wednesdays following the Japanese broadcast. Both Disney+ and Prime Video are also expected to carry the series on a delayed basis later in the season.

Nine Years in the Making — Why This Is Such a Big Deal

Youjo Senki (The Saga of Tanya the Evil) premiered in January 2017, ran for twelve episodes, and quickly built an audience well beyond the usual isekai crowd. Its pitch — a ruthless Japanese salaryman reincarnated as a small girl with extraordinary magical ability in a WWI-analogue fantasy world, then conscripted into an imperial air corps — was strange enough to be memorable and executed with enough tactical and moral seriousness to keep people watching. The 2019 film extended the story but left the main arc unresolved on television. Season 2 picks up that thread.

For Singapore anime fans, the franchise has stayed in the conversation: both the series and the film are on Crunchyroll in the region. Season 2 is the continuation those viewers have been waiting for since 2017.

New Setting, Higher Stakes

Season 2 moves the war east. It is Autumn 1926 in the show’s Unified Calendar — Tanya von Degurechaff has been promoted to Lieutenant Colonel and now commands the newly formed Kampfgruppe Salamander, a mobile strike unit built for harsh-weather operations against the Federation on the eastern front. The shift in theatre matters: the eastern campaign in Season 2’s source material is darker, more attritional, and involves opponents with a different strategic logic than the western-front enemies of Season 1. The PV suggests the production is leaning into that tonal shift.

New Characters Join the Fight

Two significant additions to the cast have been confirmed. Mikhel, a Federal aerial mage on the opposing side, is voiced by Tomokazu Sugita — one of the most recognisable voices in Japanese animation (Joseph Joestar, Persona 5’s Ryuji, Genshin Impact’s Zhongli). Lilia, a political commissar attached to Mikhel’s unit, is played by Yoko Hikasa, known for Mio Akiyama in K-On! and Rias Gremory in High School DxD. Neither character is a simple antagonist; both carry the moral complexity the show has always used to keep its ideological debate alive.

Behind the Camera

Studio NUT returns for Season 2, preserving visual continuity with the original run. The director’s chair changes, however: Yutaka Uemura, who led Season 1, is replaced by Yamamoto Takayuki. Series composition is by Inohara Kenta, with character designs by Hosokoshi Yuji. The PV’s animation quality holds up well against the benchmark the 2017 series set, and the orchestral score carries the same propulsive military energy the franchise is known for.

When and How to Watch From Singapore

Youjo Senki II premieres on 8 July 2026, airing at 9:30 PM JST on AT-X, TOKYO MX, Sun TV, KBS Kyoto, BS11, and TV Aichi in Japan. Streaming details for Singapore and Southeast Asia have not been officially announced as of this writing — the regional licensing for anime in this tier typically lands in the weeks before broadcast. Given that Season 1 and the film are on Crunchyroll in the region, that platform is the most likely home for Season 2; Muse Asia is the other strong candidate. Keep an eye on both for a confirmation before 8 July.

Saga of Tanya the Evil Season 2 Hits Crunchyroll on 8 July

Nine years after Studio NUT first put a child soldier through the horrors of an alternate-world Great War, Saga of Tanya the Evil Season 2 finally has its premiere date locked in — and Singapore fans on Crunchyroll can circle 8 July 2026 on their calendars.

Nine Years Later — Tanya Is Back

Kadokawa first confirmed a second season back in June 2021, then went very quiet. A teaser trailer surfaced in November 2025, followed by a full trailer, new key visual, and cast updates unveiled at the Kadokawa booth during AnimeJapan 2026 on 28 March. With Crunchyroll’s official summer 2026 simulcast schedule now confirmed, 8 July is the date.

For the uninitiated: the original 2017 season adapts Carlo Zen’s light novel series about a cutthroat Japanese salaryman reincarnated as Tanya von Degurechaff, a small blonde girl in a magical-meets-militaristic alternate version of early-twentieth-century Europe. She’s assigned to the Imperial Army, and she turns brutal survival instincts into terrifying battlefield efficiency. It’s part dark isekai, part WWI military thriller, and it built a fiercely loyal following across Southeast Asia. The 2019 film Saga of Tanya the Evil: The Movie followed, but Season 2 has been the one fans have spent years waiting for.

Same Studio, Same Composer, New Director

Studio NUT returns to animate the sequel, keeping the visual language consistent with Season 1 and the film. The writing is again handled by Kenta Ihara, who wrote the series composition for Season 1. Yuji Hosogoe is also back as character designer and chief animation director, so Tanya’s signature unsettling wide-eyed expression should survive the transition.

What does change is the director’s chair. Takayuki Yukimoto takes over, marking his first time leading a full series as director. That’s a notable shift from Season 1’s Yutaka Uemura, though Yukimoto steps into a production team that clearly knows the material — so the continuity risk feels manageable.

New Faces Joining the Imperial Army

Two new cast members were confirmed at AnimeJapan 2026. Tomokazu Sugita — a household name for SG anime fans across franchises from JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure to Genshin Impact — joins as a character named Mikel. Yoko Hikasa, best known here for Lycoris Recoil and Attack on Titan, voices Liliya. Character details for both remain under wraps for now.

The core cast is intact. Aoi Yuki reprises Tanya, Saori Hayami returns as the devoted Viktoriya Ivanovna Serebryakov, and Shinichiro Miki, Tessho Kenda, and Hochu Otsuka are back in their key Imperial command roles.

Where and When to Watch in Singapore

Saga of Tanya the Evil Season 2 premieres on 8 July 2026 on Tokyo MX and affiliated Japanese broadcast networks. Crunchyroll has confirmed the simulcast as part of its summer 2026 lineup for its global territories, Singapore included. Episode times will be announced closer to the premiere. An English dub has not been officially confirmed, though given the popularity of the Season 1 dub on Crunchyroll, it would be surprising if one weren’t in the works.
