Bloober Team, the Kraków studio behind the acclaimed 2024 Silent Hill 2 Remake, dropped one of the Nintendo Direct’s most unexpected reveals: Onyx: The Dark Grip, a psychological horror game exclusive to Nintendo Switch 2 — and one that physically cannot be played on a TV by design.
You Are a God Possessing an Ordinary Man
Set in an isolated town locked in endless winter, Onyx: The Dark Grip casts you not as the protagonist but as a nameless god-like presence acting upon one. Your vessel is Holden, a tired and unremarkable man with no idea he is being inhabited by something supernatural. The game shifts between two perspectives: The Vessel, who navigates the fog-choked town and unravels why winter never ends; and The God, the player-controlled force that grows progressively harder to contain and shape within him.
Published by Broken Mirror Games, Onyx features an original score composed by Jan Borysewicz and performed by the Prague Philharmonic Orchestra — an unusually cinematic production commitment for this kind of release.
Handheld Only — the Entire Game Lives in Your Hands
The defining feature of Onyx is also its most provocative design choice: it will not run in docked mode at all. Every mechanic in the game requires the player to physically hold the Switch 2, and Bloober has built three hardware interactions into the core loop:
- Touchscreen swipes — to manipulate in-game objects; the trailer flashes a fingerprint icon and the prompt “SWIPE — DON’T SHATTER IT” as Holden faces a cracked mirror
- Motion tilting — physically tilt the console to channel The God’s power and crush enemies
- Microphone input — blow into the Switch 2’s mic to breathe warmth back into Holden when the cold closes in
Bloober CEO Piotr Babieno explained the philosophy in the reveal: “Nintendo has always believed that the hardware itself can be part of the magic of a game. With Onyx: The Dark Grip, we wanted to take that philosophy somewhere darker.”
What This Means for Singapore Switch 2 Owners
If you play your Switch 2 exclusively docked, Onyx: The Dark Grip is simply not for you — intentionally. For players who use the Switch 2 as a handheld, this is precisely the kind of horror experience that only a held console can deliver: the screen in your hands becomes the window into Holden’s deteriorating mind, and the physical act of tilting and touching the device becomes part of the dread.
