Marvel’s Wolverine Reviews Are In: A Gorgeous PS5 Debut That Pulls Its Punches

The reviews are in, and Marvel’s Wolverine — Insomniac Games’ take on Logan — lands on PS5 this coming Monday, 15 September. The aggregate scores tell a story of a game critics admire more than they love: Metacritic 77 / OpenCritic 78 at time of writing, with strong praise for its combat and visual ambition, and pointed criticism of its story and pacing.

Here’s the full picture.

What Critics Are Saying

The camps split fairly cleanly between critics who came away impressed and those who felt the game didn’t fully deliver on its R-rated, mature-tone premise.

OutletScoreVerdict in a line
IGN6/10Stunning combat, disappointing story
GameSpot6/10Gorgeous but repetitive
GamesRadar6/10Visually spectacular, narratively safe
Push Square8/10Insomniac at its visceral best
Destructoid8/10A bloody good time
WorthPlaying8/10Logan finally gets his due
Giant Bomb5/10Too many missed opportunities

The Praise: Combat and Visuals

Across the board, reviewers agree on one thing: the combat is exceptional. Wolverine’s bone claws, adamantium skeleton, and berserker rage feel genuinely different from the Spider-Man games — heavier, more brutal, with a satisfying risk-reward loop around managing the healing factor. The destruction physics, character animations, and sheer visual fidelity on PS5 are also consistently highlighted as among the best Insomniac has produced.

The Criticism: Story and Repetition

Where critics diverge is on the story. Several reviewers — particularly those in the 5–6/10 camp — found the narrative to be a well-trodden origin-adjacent journey that doesn’t fully exploit its mature rating or Logan’s complex history. Enemy variety also came under fire, with some critics noting that the mid-game in particular leans heavily on recycled encounter design.

If you’re planning to pick up the game at launch on the 15th, it’s worth checking with your local retailer on bundle availability — stock was limited in August pre-orders.

Our Take

A Metacritic 77 is not a flop — it’s a solid debut for a new IP, and Insomniac’s reputation for refined combat systems is very much intact. If you’re a Marvel fan who loves tight, responsive brawlers and you can forgive a story that plays it safer than you’d like, Marvel’s Wolverine is going to give you a very good weekend. If you were hoping for a narrative that matched the darker tone of the marketing — temper those expectations slightly.

For Singapore players: the SGD 89 standard edition is available at launch. We’ll be keeping an eye on post-launch patches and any local deals in the weeks ahead.
