Nintendo dropped a new “The Stage Is Set” trailer for Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave today alongside a detail that has the tactics community genuinely excited: for the first time in the Fire Emblem series’ 35-year history, you will be able to play the entire game using Joy-Con 2 mouse controls. The game launches exclusively on Nintendo Switch 2 on September 17, 2026.
How Joy-Con 2 Mouse Controls Work
Each Joy-Con 2 controller has an optical sensor on its flatter bottom edge — the same one that powers mouse mode in games like Metroid Prime 4. In Fortune’s Weave, sliding a Joy-Con 2 across any flat surface lets you point at tiles and units exactly like a PC mouse, with the shoulder buttons acting as click inputs. You can move troops, open battle info panels, scroll menus, and even activate Fortuna’s Blessing rewind — all without touching a thumbstick.

Nintendo’s official description puts it simply: “For the first time in the Fire Emblem series, you can play with mouse controls using Joy-Con 2 controllers. Intuitively move units across the battlefield, quickly access helpful information, and more, changing seamlessly between button and mouse controls whenever you like.” The feature is entirely optional — traditional d-pad and thumbstick controls remain fully supported, and you can switch back and forth mid-battle.
This makes Fortune’s Weave part of a growing list of Switch 2 titles — including Mario Party Jamboree 2 and Civilization VII — that use Joy-Con 2 mouse mode to close the gap between handheld and desktop strategy games. For fans who grew up playing Advance Wars on a GBA, the idea of dragging units around a Fire Emblem grid with a mouse is a significant quality-of-life upgrade.
Four Routes, One Fate

Fortune’s Weave is developed by Intelligent Systems — the studio behind every mainline Fire Emblem — and sits in the same world as Three Houses, set in the year 1454 as the Dagdan Empire collapses under the return of Balor, a resurrected demon god. A wandering soul, guided by the time-travelling goddess Fortuna, must recruit and guide four separate heroes to change their fates and stop Balor before history is sealed.
The four playable protagonists each lead their own story route, playable in any order:
- Cai — a determined young boy fighting to free his imprisoned father
- Theodora — a queen seeking to fulfil a long-held dream for her homeland
- Dietrich — a wandering swordsman always hunting for a stronger challenge
- Leda — a musician with her sights locked on revenge

Each route has its own tactical battles, unique Blaze Arts (special moves that burn HP to unleash), and between-battle activities — training, recruiting allies, shopping, and exploring the continent. Fortuna’s Blessing, the series’ signature rewind mechanic, returns in updated form and can be triggered via mouse click or button.
