What’s New in the Definitive Edition

This isn’t just a straight port. The Definitive Edition uses Switch 2’s extra horsepower to push the experience meaningfully beyond what the original 2020 release could deliver:

• Smooth 60fps gameplay — a genuine upgrade over the original Switch version, which had variable performance especially during the game’s massive multi-enemy battles.
• More enemies on screen simultaneously — the defining appeal of the Warriors formula, now turned up a notch.
• Calamity Mode — a punishing new difficulty where enemies hit harder, healing items are far less effective, and mistakes are costly. Veteran players finally have a reason to return.
• All 21 fighters included — the complete Expansion Pass roster (Sooga, Astor, Hilda and the rest) is bundled in from the start at no extra cost.
• GameShare support — allowing co-op play across two Switch 2 systems with one game card, a useful option for local two-player sessions.
• amiibo compatibility and surround sound support round out the package.

Existing Owners Get a 50% Discount

If you already own Age of Calamity on the original Switch, Nintendo has a direct upgrade path. Existing owners can purchase the Switch 2 Definitive Edition at 50% off via the Nintendo eShop, and your save data carries over from the original version — meaning your completed chapters, unlocked fighters, and progress all transfer intact.

One caveat worth noting: this isn’t a standard Nintendo Switch 2 Edition (the kind that unlocks as an upgrade pack). It’s a separate purchase with its own product listing. The discount for prior owners is applied at checkout on the eShop after verifying ownership, rather than being a simple upgrade key. Either way, the barrier to re-entry is low for anyone who put hours into the original.

Pre-Orders, Pricing, and Switch 2 eShop Access

Pre-orders went live on the Nintendo eShop immediately after the Direct ended. The US price is USD 59.99 for the full Definitive Edition, with Japan pricing confirmed at ¥8,980. Singapore fans can access the game through the Nintendo eShop — as with all Switch 2 digital releases, region availability follows eShop settings. A local SGD price has not been officially confirmed at the time of writing.

The game is a digital and physical release. Physical copies come on a Game Key Card (not a full cartridge), so an internet connection is required for the initial download regardless of format. File size is 22 GB.

Save data transfer works by loading your original Switch version save to Nintendo’s cloud service or moving it directly, then importing it on Switch 2 — the process is the same as other Definitive Edition titles in the Switch 2 library.

A Zelda 40th Anniversary Year Keeps Delivering

The Definitive Edition lands in what has been a banner year for Zelda fans. Earlier in today’s same Direct, Nintendo revealed the Ocarina of Time remake and a 40th Anniversary Edition hardware bundle. Adding Age of Calamity‘s Definitive Edition to February rounds out the series’ footprint on Switch 2 — from a reconstructed classic to a fully enhanced Breath of the Wild-era prequel in the space of a few months.
