Dave Bautista Is the New Kratos in Amazon’s God of War Series

The Spartan warrior has a new face. Amazon Prime Video’s live-action God of War series has officially recast its lead — Dave Bautista steps in as Kratos, replacing Ryan Hurst following an injury that sidelined the original choice during active production.

Why Kratos Has a New Face

Ryan Hurst — best known for Sons of Anarchy and The Walking Dead — was the original Kratos. Production had been underway in Vancouver, Canada since early 2026, with four episodes completed, when Hurst tore his bicep performing a stunt in July. The injury required surgery, and the recovery timeline would have pushed filming well into 2027, forcing a decision: wait for Hurst, or recast.

Amazon chose to recast. According to Deadline, Bautista had actually been the second choice for the role during initial casting. This time around, the studio moved quickly — Bautista’s casting was confirmed by Variety on August 21. Those four completed episodes will need to be reshot, with production expected to resume in mid-October.

The Full Cast

Beyond Kratos, the series has assembled an impressive ensemble to bring Norse mythology to life. Callum Vinson plays Atreus, Kratos’ son at the centre of the father-son journey that defined the 2018 game. The rest of the gods and giants fill out as follows:

  • Mandy Patinkin as Odin, the All-Father
  • Ed Skrein as Baldur
  • Max Parker as Heimdall
  • Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor
  • Teresa Palmer as Sif
  • Alastair Duncan as Mimir
  • Danny Woodburn as Brok
  • Jeff Gulka as Sindri

Ronald D. Moore — the showrunner behind Battlestar Galactica and Outlander — is attached as writer and executive producer. The series has received a two-season order from the outset, a sign of Amazon’s long-term commitment to the franchise.

What This Means for Singapore Fans

God of War is one of the biggest PlayStation franchises in Singapore. The 2018 soft reboot and its 2022 sequel God of War: Ragnarök were both chart-toppers locally, and Bautista — known for Drax in Guardians of the Galaxy, plus roles in Dune and Blade Runner 2049 — is a legitimately bankable action star whose physicality makes him a credible Kratos. He has spoken in interviews about being a dedicated gamer and a fan of the franchise, which adds a layer of authenticity to the casting.

Amazon Prime Video is widely available in Singapore, so when the series eventually airs — a late 2027 premiere seems most likely given the production restart — it will land here day-and-date with global audiences. The two-season order also means the Jötunheim story has room to breathe rather than being compressed into a single run, which bodes well for how faithfully the adaptation can treat the source material.

The success of The Last of Us on HBO Max has shown that faithful, character-driven game adaptations can draw in players and newcomers alike. With Moore’s pedigree and a cast this strong, God of War on Prime Video has every reason to clear that bar — even if the road to air has been bumpier than anyone planned.
