One of gaming’s most distinctive cult premises just surfaced again. Showa American Story, the alt-history action RPG from Nekcom Entertainment, returned at Gamescom Opening Night Live on 25 August with a new in-game gameplay trailer — the game’s biggest showing since going quiet in 2025. No release date yet, but the trailer is playable as a hands-on demo at Gamescom right now.

Japan Bought America and Everything Went Wrong
The premise is genuinely unlike anything else: in this game’s timeline, Japan purchased most of the United States in the 1980s, and now a zombie outbreak has torn through the resulting cultural mashup. You play as Chigusa Choko, an anime-loving biker girl tearing through the ruins of what used to be California on a road trip that spans neo-Yokohama (formerly Los Angeles), San Francisco, Las Vegas, and Neo Tokyo #4 (formerly Austin, Texas).
Choko travels with companions including Michael Hero and Bubba, and faces off against the mysterious antagonist Mutsuki Akitora. The full Japanese voice cast is in, the neon 80s aesthetic is turned up to maximum, and the creative director XY Luo at Nekcom has spoken openly about drawing on 1980s Chinese cultural experiences during the reform era — blending American muscle, Japanese pop culture, and post-apocalyptic survival into something that genuinely does not have a clean comparison point.
How It Plays
Combat is real-time with melee weapons, ranged firearms, and improvised tools. The system includes weapon-specific attacks, dodges, counters, and executions. Outside of combat, Showa American Story leans into its Japanese influence: there are arcade minigames, hopscotch, dumbbell training, and other recreation mechanics for unlocking abilities and boosting stats. Dialogue choices affect the world, there’s a companion system, and the narrative is described by the developer as “emotionally charged” underneath the comedy. It plays closer to an action RPG than a beat-em-up.
Platform targets are PS5 and PC (Steam). The game missed its original 2025 window; publisher 2P Games has not confirmed a new release date as of Gamescom. The Steam wishlist is live if you want to track updates.

The Anime-Game Crossover SG Fans Should Be Watching
For Singapore players, this one sits at the exact intersection of the local gaming audience’s tastes: it plays like an action RPG, it looks like an 80s anime, and the premise is the kind of thing that circulates on gaming Discord servers for months after every new trailer. The Japanese voice cast is a genuine pull for SG fans who follow anime voice actors, and the post-apocalyptic open road setting with full 80s aesthetics plays beautifully to local nostalgia for that era of Japanese culture.
