Made in Abyss: Awakening Mystery — New Trailer, Cast and Theme Song Drop

A new official teaser just dropped for Made in Abyss: Mezameru Shinpi (Made in Abyss: Awakening Mystery), the first entry in Kinema Citrus’s new film trilogy — and it comes packed with a cast reveal and a theme song announcement. The film opens in Japanese theatres on October 23, 2026.

Into the Seventh Layer — Where the Abyss Gets Truly Merciless

Picking up directly after the end of The Golden City of the Scorching Sun, the new film follows Riko, Reg, Nanachi, and Faputa as they descend into the Abyss’s seventh layer — territory the series has only hinted at until now. Director Masayuki Kojima returns at Kinema Citrus, with Hideyuki Kurata on scripts and character designers Kazuchika Kise and Yuka Kuroda reprising their roles. The returning cast includes Miyu Tomita as Riko and Mariya Ise as Reg.

New Cast and Kevin Penkin’s Theme Feat. Mori Calliope

The trailer introduces two new characters debuting in the seventh layer. Tepasté is voiced by Sumire Morohoshi, and Cravali is voiced by Takanori Hoshino. Their roles in the seventh layer arc are kept cryptic in the teaser — expect the series’ trademark mix of wonder and dread to apply.

On the music side, series composer Kevin Penkin returns to score the film, co-creating the theme song Chain of the Abyss with VTuber and singer Mori Calliope. Penkin’s work on the Made in Abyss soundtrack has earned widespread acclaim from anime music fans, and the pairing with Calliope — one of the most-listened-to English-language VTuber musicians — is the kind of collaboration that turns a trailer into a streaming event in its own right.

A Three-Film Commitment

This is the first in a planned trilogy of theatrical films. For fans who have waited since The Golden City of the Scorching Sun for more, the confirmation of a full trilogy means Kinema Citrus and KADOKAWA intend to see the manga’s remaining arcs through to an anime conclusion. Adding to the promotional momentum, the revival theatrical screening of the previous film, Made in Abyss: Dawn of the Deep Soul, began in Japanese theatres on August 7 and runs through August 20.

What Singapore Fans Need to Know

The October 23 opening is Japan-only for now; no international theatrical dates have been announced. Both previous Made in Abyss seasons are available via Crunchyroll in Singapore, making a streaming window there the most realistic path for most local viewers — though no streaming date has been confirmed yet. We’ll update when international details arrive.
