SITEX 2018 – a 30th Anniversary Special

It’s the time of the year again for the last largest consumer IT show of 2018. SITEX 2018 is definitely an event you would not want to miss this year. Besides a showcase of the latest consumer IT products, there are also a few unique experiential zones that you can visit while at the show. Here are some of the highlights.

Vivo Booth

If you are a budget sensitive individual looking for a phone with fairly  decent specification, several Chinese brands may come into your mind. One such brand is Vivo. Compared to the other counterparts from China such as Huawei and Oppo, Vivo pricing is a bit less stressful for your pocket.

The phone feature at the show is the newly launched Vivo V11, priced at SGD 599. Yet at this price point, the Vivo V11 comes with a fairly decent hardware. A 25 MP front camera, and a dual 12MP/5MP rear camera powered by the Snapdragon 660 chipset – octa-core processor at 2.2 GHz. RAM is also fairly generous at 6 GB. The phone also features an in-screen fingerprint sensor.

Google Smart Home

For the first time this year, Google has a huge space dedicated to its own Google devices. Showcased here is the recently release Pixel 3 as well as the Google Home. Experience the power of AI in your camera where Google’s smart AI will help you choose the best photo for your shot in a feature known as the Top Shot. Through augmented reality, you can also take a picture with your favorite Marvel Hero such as the Hulk and Iron Man using the Camera’s playground feature.

There is also a smart living room at Google Smart Home zone. Interact with Google Home and experience first hand how it can turn control your lighting and electronic appliances at home. Beyond that, Google Home can  also help you play videos from YouTube or music from Spotify hands-free.

Secretlab Chairs

If you are looking for a good quality chair for your gaming rig or PC, be sure to check out Secretlab chairs. Many of them are on display at the show for you to try out before buying. Started in 2014, Secretlab has been consistently trying to create the best quality chair for gamers. Now with over 100,000 satisfied customers worldwide, Secretlab is a well-known brand in the market. Learn more about how they build their chairs and try our the chairs yourselves at their booth.

Gaming Experiential Zone

Gamers will find themselves spending much of their time at the Gaming Experiential Zone. Both Xbox and PlayStation have booths of their own at this year’s SITEX. You can try out the latest games on both major consoles.

Forza Horizon 4 is featured at the Xbox booth with a full racing rig that comes with an ultra wide monitor.

As for PlayStation, the latest Spider-Man is a key highlight with a life-size Spider-Man that you can take picture with.

Esport is also part of the gaming experiential Zone with the Omen Community Esports Challenge presented by GameAsia. Game tournaments  of popular competitive games such as CS:GO, DOTA 2 and PUBG will be held at the area.

Missing the good old days of the SNES or Sega Megadrive? RetroDNA have brought out their retro gaming console for your to try out at their booth for free! For a sense of gaming  nostalgia, do head over to their booths.

Situated in the Gaming Experiential Zone is Aftershock’s Booth.  There have two man’s cave displayed that for you to get inspiration for your next house renovation.

A Lego Star Wars Computer Desk that you can admire and play

“A long time ago in a galaxy far far away…”, the iconic phrase that all Star Wars fans would know. Many of us would have bought one or more Star Wars merchandises and memorabilias over the years. Be it a model Death Stars or a Lego Millennium Falcon, the main issue with them is where best to display them at home. Most of the time, they may just be kept in boxes and get chucked in a corner of the store room. Or be sitting on selves collecting dusts. Today, we found out a practical way for display them while not wasting space at home!

This fully functional PC works as a good home entertainment system

Introducing, the Star Wars Built-in Glass Top Computer Desk by NXND computer! A fully functional desktop build within a fully exposed glass table, this computer is part art and part gaming rig. Powered by AMD Ryzen 1600x processor and PowerColor RX580 Red Devil graphic card, this machine is capable of powering most modern game in high fidelity graphic. The liquid cooling system extends throughout the table is a perfect match for the Star Wars Lego hangar that house two Lego X-Wings. It is the most challenging part of building the rig as it involves laying the pipes in a practical yet aesthetic manner.

A top view of the Lego Rebel Hangar

According to NXND, this computer desk used to have three 27″ inch screen but now has a single 46″ screen. The 7.1 sound is driven by Yamaha RX-V573, perfect for your movie and game. All in all, the desktop cost around SGD10,000 to build. Not bad consider that it is a functional computer, table and a piece of art that you can enjoy looking at.

No, I am your father.

Right now, this Computer Desk is with one of the founder of NXND. It’s worthwhile to mention that he has many other Star Wars Lego models that he hangs up around his room for a more complete Star Wars experience. He may soon get a Death Star to further expand his Star Wars themed room. He is also a Gundam fan and plans to have his collection up for display soon. This is truly a man’s cave!

XM Studio has a long line-up of impressive figurines displayed in the middle of the showfloor. Each item on display is a collectible on it’s own. So while you may not have the money to buy all of them home, you should definitely take as many pictures as you can.

An entire line for your eyes to feast upon!

For gamers, the Good Game Experience (GGXP) show which is co-located with STGCC is an entire floor just for gamers. The World Electronic Sports Game (WESG) supported by Alisports (Alibaba Group’s sports branch) and local esports initiative Singapore’s Cybersports & Online Gaming Association (SCOGA) will be holding the Singapore qualifier at GGXP this year. See Gaming Athletes battling out in games such as Counter Strike: Global Offensive, Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft, Dota 2, Starcraft II and Vainglory. Lend your support to your favourite local esports teams at WESG stage arena as the battle to represent Singapore in the finals.

GGXP 2017 – Credits: STGCC

Of course, for the first time this year GameTrader.SG is partnering with STGCC and GGXP to bring a unique game trading experience to gamers. Unlike other shows where you simply selling your games at a low price to game shop, the GameTrader.SG’s event aims to help you sell your game directly to gamers at the show. While we do not buy back your game, you can simply drop off your game at our booth and potentially sell them at a much higher price. Buyers can view the catalogue of games available (more information here) and purchase them from our booth. If we manage to help you sell your game, you will receive your money at the end of the day! It’s that simple.

More information

We are also organising multiple ‘Meet and Trade’ sessions. Come down with your console game and trade on spot with other gamers according to the schedule which is available here.

So remember to bring your PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox and Nintendo switch games to the show! Other game consoles are also welcomed.

As usual, we will be doing the media coverage for the event on the actual day and bring the event to you via our blog. Also do visit our booth at the GGXP show booth GA2! See you on the 8th and 9th of September!

Step into Japan through Japan Park

Japan Park 2018

The inaugural Japan Park 2018 is happening now at Suntec Convention Center Hall 403 and 404 from 4th of August to 5th of August. The tagline of the event is “Play, Get and Taste a selection from 47 Prefectures”. Be sure to come with an empty stomach so that you can eat your fill at the event itself. You can also buy a piece of ‘Japan’ back home in form of a tatami at The Tatami Shop.

Event Map

The entrance fee is SGD15 for a day and SGD25 for two days. The area itself isn’t that big that would warrant a two full day visits. However, if there are performances at the main stage that you wish to catch on both day, the two day pass will be suitable for you. There are other special package ticket which comes with either a special Keisuke Ramen or a VIP ticket for Poppin’Party, a popular girl band in Japan. More information at this link.

CharaExpo Mini

CharaExpo Mini

Unlike the last CharaExpo, this mini edition is definitely not comparable to the full scale CharaExpo of last year. The area is much smaller than the previous year. However, for fans of  BanG Dream!, this year CharaExpo will not disappoint you. Members from Poppin’Party will be performing live at the Omakase stage on the last day of Japan Park.

Poppin’Party

There was also a Yukata talk show on the first day where all the fans get to meet the members of Poppin’Party.

Giant posters for you to take picture

Other than BanG! Dream, Love Live is also another franchise that is promoted at this year CharaExpo Mini. There is a booth dedicated to Love Live where a big screen version of the popular Love Live School Idol Festival is available for you to try.

You can also get merchandises at the Bushiroad booth located in CharaExpo Mini. Some items are already sold out on Day 1. So make sure to get them quickly if you have decided on what to buy.

Experience Japan

Japan Park

There are a few unique Japan experience you can get to try out at Japan park. Koka city is known as the city of Ninja in Japan. Try your hands at shooting some ninja shuriken at a target. It is definitely not as simple as you think.

Koka Ninja

Matsuri game is another popular activity enjoyed by many in Japan during any Matsuri (festival). There are however only two games available at the Maturi Game booth.

Matsuri

For the tea lovers, you can get an authentic Japanese Tea Ceremony experience . There are limited time slot so you may wish to register earlier with the staff.

Japanese Tea Ceremony

Food at WA-Shiok Gourmet Festa

WA-Shiok
Gourmet Festa

The WA-ShiokGourmet Festa is where you will find some of the best Japanese restaurants that are available in Singapore. With 18 stores including Keisuke Ramen, Ginza Lion and Menya Sakura, you will be able to enjoy all the different food together at the same time.

The event uses a cashless token system. Your wristband is how you will pay. Do note that the credits inside are non-refundable, so top-up them gradually and not at a single go.

Japan Park is definitely an event for Japanese lover. The event itself covers a broad base of Japanese Culture. However, the breadth comes at the expense of depth. It doesn’t feel like a Matsuri to me, nor does it feels like an Anime/Manga event. Nonetheless, Japan Park is a good to visit for the weekend for all the Japanese lovers out there.

Nishimoto Rimi provides the voice of Rimi Ushigome. ©BanG Dream! Project ©bushiroad All Rights Reserved

[GameTrader.SG (GT)] How has becoming a Seiyuu changed your life?

[Rimi] My life has completely changed because before becoming a voice actress, I was very a shy and simple girl from the rural part of Japan. Now, I perform in front of people as an actress and musician, I give energy to the people with my performance. I am still trying to become a great artist that can really inspire people.

[GT] Could you share with us how did you started with Voice Acting? Were you scouted or you applied for the role?

[Rimi] I started when I auditioned for a new group in an animated series called Milky Homes. I actually wasn’t selected but they remembered me playing the guitar during the audition. When they were putting together BanG Dream!, they contacted me to be part of the show.

[GT] We love BanG Dream! What do you enjoy about being part of BanG Dream providing the voice of Ushigome Rimi?

[Rimi] My character Ushigoma Rimi is a very girly and feminine character. She’s very adorable and I really enjoy playing her as she’s very cute. Rimi loves eating chocolate in the anime, which is very similar to me, as I love chocolates!

[GT] We also heard that you are into games! What are the recent game titles that you have played and enjoyed?

[Rimi] Nintendo Switch’s Splatoon 2! I am constantly playing that.

©BanG Dream! Project ©bushiroad All Rights Reserved

[GT] Who were you inspired by or what anime inspired you to be one?

[Rimi] I love Angel Beats, which inspired me to be a voice actress. As for who’s my inspiration as a voice actress, I do not have anyone in mind.

[GT] Lastly, any upcoming development for BanG Dream! or Poppin’Party that you would like to share with us?

[Rimi] On 11th of July, Poppin’Party will release our 10th single called Double Rainbow, along with a new song, 最高 (さあいこう)!. Also, Poppin’Party will be performing in a ticketed event in Shanghai on 21st of July called “ビリビリマクロリンク” at the Mercedes Benz Arena.

Tokyo Pokemon Cafe Review

The new permanent Pokemon Cafe in Tokyo is a must visit for anyone who loves the Pokemon Franchise. As mentioned in our previous post, the cafe is not available for walk-in and advance reservation must be made. Check out our guide here if you want  to make a reservation.

How to get there

The Pokemon Cafe is located in the Nihombashi Takashimaya East Wing on level 5. The nearest station is the Nihombashi Metro Station. If you are taking JR instead, Tokyo Station would be the nearest. There is a special elevator that will take you up all the way to the Pokemon Cafe. Here is the Google Map link.

You should be facing a lift lobby with lots of Pokemon mural. Just take the elevator to the 5th floor and you will be at the Pokemon Center. The cafe is just right beside it.

If you take the metro to Nihombashi Metro station, exit B2 or B1 will take you directly to Takashimaya. However, that is the main building which you will have to take an elevator to level 8 where there is a bridge to connect to the east wing level 5.

The Experience

Photos. Take tons of them at the Cafe. Every nook and cranny of the cafe is littered with Pokemon plushies, poster, figurine and more. Instagrammable moment at every turn. Be sure to check every corner of the cafe because behind that pillar maybe a cute Pikachu statue that you can take picture with.

There are some freebies that the staff will give you throughout your time at the cafe. For a start, we are given Pikachu stickers while queueing up to enter the cafe.

Upon entering the cafe, a face-down placemat at each seat will be there waiting for you. Each placemat has a random Pokemon. If you wish to keep it, place it in your bag so that food will not get onto the placemat and dirty it later.

There will also be a small game you play on the iPad to get a coaster. Each drink ordered is entitled to one game. Basically, you get to choose between eight cards. The card that you choose will determine what Pokemon coaster you will get. We manage to get two Pikachu coasters!

The cafe is also filled with merchandise to purchase. From pikachu plates to mugs and plushies, you can easily spend quite a bit on the merchandise itself. Leave some time after the meal to do it.

The Food

The menu is fairly simple with not that many choices for mains. Pikachu takes the center stage. Three out of the five mains are Pikachu themed. Ordering it through an iPad which luckily comes in multiple languages such as English and Chinese.

We tried four mains; the Pikachu Cabonara, Pikachu set, Eevee’s Burger set and the Pikachu curry rice. The food was served relatively quickly and plating is almost identical to the menu. Much effort has been given to the appearance of the meals but the same cannot be said for the actual taste. Having tried many Japanese food for the past few days, the cafe’s Pokemon food is fairly expensive and not as tantalizing. But bear in mind that this is common for most theme cafe. The price has the experience baked in as well.

For some of the food items, you can choose to add-on the merchandise that comes with the food. For example, paying an additional 1,200 yen will get you the Pikachu plate that was used to serve the Pikachu set. Of course, the actual plate that is used will not be the one that is given to you. You will get a ticket for the items and at the end of your meal, you will collect it from the counter. Do remember to collect them in case you forget.

Pikachu Appearance!

Just like in Disneyland where a meet and greet with Mickey Mouse is the highlight of the trip, Pokemon Cafe has its very own Pikachu meet and greet session as well! So do not rush through your food and leave before the grand entrance of Pikachu. Decked in a cook outfit, this Pikachu mascot will perform a small dance with maximum kawaii (cuteness) overload. If your seat is at a corner of the cafe, do not worry too much. Pikachu mascot will come to all corners of the cafe to perform its little dance as well as handshaking with the patrons.

Unfortunately, taking picture with Pikachu is prohibited. You will not be able to stand beside the mascot and have a nice picture taken. So try your luck to get yourself in a picture with Pikachu at the background if you can.

Tips

Maximize your time.

Do note that you have only 90 minutes for you time slot so be sure to maximize you visit. Our suggestion is to take a look at the menu beforehand via this link. This way, you need not waste time looking through the menu.

If you are having a course of main and dessert, placing your order earlier will give you more time for the dessert later. Once you have placed the order, walk around the cafe and take some pictures while everyone is still busy looking at the menu and deciding what to eat. You will have minimal photobomb experience that way.

At around 30 minutes into your timeslot, a staff will come out and start to announce the arrival of Pikachu. Get your camera ready at this point for Pikachu special appearance!

Visit Pokemon Center

The Pokemon Center is just right beside the cafe. Be sure to check it out for more Pokemon merchandise. The Pikachu plushies from the cafe is available at the Pokemon center as well. There are many more Pokemon plushies in the Pokemon center that you can take home with.

Reservation

Make reservation a month in advance to ensure you will get a seat. Seats go out pretty fast. You can check out our guide here. Also, one of the best time to go is the 10:50am slot. This is the time with the less people and the most energetic Pikachu mascot. Also, you can have a the meal as a brunch saving you some money. If you are coming for the 10:50am, please note that Takashimaya is only opened at 10:30am, so coming earlier only results in you waiting for the gate to be opened.

Overall

The Pikachu Cafe, I mean Pokemon Cafe, is highly recommended by us. Though it requires reservation, it is actually worth the effort. Reservation does not require any upfront payment so it is fairly straightforward. Do not expect great food but expect great experience and photo moments.
