The novel earned an honorable mention at the 8th Kyoto Animation Award in 2017 \u2014 so this is a genuinely homegrown KyoAni story, developed in-house from novel to animated screen.<\/p>\n<p>The setting is alternate-history Meiji-era Kyoto, a city permanently blanketed in smoke from the steam engines that power civilization. In this world, electricity was never discovered \u2014 it remains little more than a fantasy.
